f you are an alcoholic
and remember reading
several years ago that
you could learn to be a
moderate drinker,
forget it! According to
John E. Helier, M.D., et al.
only 20 of the 1,289 alcoholic
patients that he followed for
five to seven years were able to
become controlled and moderate
drinkers. And those were mostly
women with less severe
alcoholism.
They also studied three large
groups of men with psychiatric
illnesses. Alcohol was the cause
of the illness in about one-third
of the men in all age groups up
to the age of 65 years.
One of the greatest public
health benefits to the United
States would be the cure or
prevention of alcoholism. (J.E.
Helzer, M.D., et al, Department
of Psychiatry, Washington
University School of Medicine,
St. Louis, New England Journal
of Medicine, June 27, 1985).
HOW TO HAVE
A HAPPY FAMILY
Healthy families have six
major traits, according to Mick
Stinnett and John Defrain in a
book called "Secrets of Strong
Families" and discussed by
David R. Mace, Ph.D.:
Mutual appreciation — they
constantly affirm, support and
express their gratitude to each
other.
Commitment — they are
dedicated to each family
member's welfare and
happiness.
Communication — they have
developed the ability to
communicatewith each other
and they share their thoughts
and feelings.

Moo together -- they choose
to spend.a lot of time working,
playing and sharing together.
Spiritual wellness -= they
share the same basic values,
believe that life is good and
have a sense of purpose to their
lives.
Coping ability — when crises
arise, they work together and
use them as opportunities for
growth.
You can learn to enrich
your marriage:
Work at the marriage. It is a
lifelong task, and you must
work together for mutual
growth and change.
Communicate. Be open to
each other about your feeli gs,
thoughts, hopes and fears sd
that you can coordinate your
lives for genuine sharing.
Let your fights be creative.
Disagreements are inevitable,
but if you can share and
understand your angers, you can
learn what each other needs,
and how each of you can
contribute to the relationship.
