Are they the main ingredients? Why would two food products be good for the hair? ' There are key words which one sees written everywhere in the marketplace today. These„ words such as organic, natural, pure, lite, wheat germ, honey, yogurt — attract consumers and sell products. Since there is no government standard for the definition of organic or natural, manufacturers can use these words as they wish. According to an ingredients list supplied by Ann Polo of Faberge, Inc., this shampoo contains about 30 ingredients, two of which are wheat germ oil and honey. Polo states that "because of the competitive nature of our business, percentages of ingredients are not made available to the public." Contrary to popular belief, hair cannot be "fed." Hair is essentially dead tissue and does not absorb the ingredients in shampoo or conditioners. The most that wheat germ oil or honey can do is coat the hair, but it 'stands to reason that since Shampoos have detergents in them, any amount of "food" remaining on the hair after a good cleaning would be negligible. FLEA INFESTATION I rented an apartment and discovered soon after that the place, which otherwise seemed to be clean, was infested with fleas. So far I've spent about $30 on various cans of poisons such as D -Con flea Killer and Strike Flea Ender. One is a bomb mist and the other is a spray. But after a day or so I see evidence of fleas again. The landlord won't do anything about it and says 1 must have brought the fleas in, which is ridiculous. I'm at a loss to know how to cope with this problem at this point. The previous tenant must have had a pet which contaminated the apartment. According to the University of California's Cooperative Extension material. on flea control, sprays and botnbs will kill a lot of the fleas but probably never eliminate them because the poisons don't penetrate the eggs, which eventually hatch and start the problem all over again. The only remedy l would suggest at this point is to call in a professional pest control company. The stuff they use is stronger than anything you can buy at a hardware store, and they guarantee their work. There must be other ways that readers are coping with flea problems in their homes. If you have managed to get a flea problem under control, please share your secrets with us. ORGANIC RICE I understand that it is very difficult to grow rice "organically." " By organically, does this mean these rice producers use no chemicals whatsoever? Do they use fertilizers? Barry Stice, general manager of Lundberg Farm in California, says that his company produces two kinds of brown rice — organic and commercial. Their certified organic rice is fertilized with composted chicken manure in conjunction with various cover crops and is never touched by any type of toxic chemical material.
