Dr. Oakes first surgeon at Clinton Public Hospital By Patti Munnings CLINTON - "If I were a young man just starting in the medical field, I would want to specialize and work with a group of doc- tors," says Dr. Walter A. Oakes. Thinking back to his early years, Dr. Oakes remembered how a friend from Guelph, Dr. Peter Stewart, had inspired him to become a doctor., After having taught school, Dr. Oakes started at the ' Toronto Medical School at the age of 23 in the field of Surgery and General Practice. "I was anxiously awaiting the arrival of my first patient" said Dr. Oakes about how he felt that day in 1930' when he opened up his first office in the small lower part of a duplex in Toronto. A doctor never knew how things would turn out, because in those days people just didn't go to the doctor unless they had to, so a doctor's survival depended on the number of patients that showed up. As well as having his own practice, he work-' ed at the Outpatient Departmentof a Toron- to Hospital. ' When Clinton Public Hospital was in need of a surgeon in 1933, at the urging of another Toronto doctor, Dr. Oakes decided to make the move to .Clintons He recalls receiving. just $25 for the care of an obstetric patient. He was the first doctor to introduce the technique of Hip Pinning at Clinton hospital and demonstrated this technique at St. Joseph's Hospital in London. A member of the board to the Clinton Public Hospital for many years, Dr. Oakes retired in 1970. Fred Greene Thompson came to Clinton with his parents in 1899 at the age of two. Deciding to follow in his father's footsteps, Dr. Charles Thompson, he entered the University of Western Ontario to study medicine. His education was interrupted for a few years when he enlisted in the Army . during WWI, attaining the rank of Lieute- nant • Corporal. ' He graduated from the University in 1924. In 1925 he married Alice Crookes, a stu- dent nurse. Then he set up a medical prac- tice at their Ontario Street home in Clinton with his wife working at his side. An active member of the community, Dr. Thompson became a Life Member of the On- tarro Medical Association in 1976. Dr. Thompson retired in 1977. In 1970 Dr. Michael Watts came .to, work • the hospital as a surgeon and 1971 brought ,yet another Surgeon Dr. Kenton C. Lambert. On July 10, 1971 Dr. Brian Baker opened up an office in the former office of Dr. Oakes. During 1970-71, the physiotherapy depart- ment'was extended. It is interesting to note that the first physiotherapy department at the hospital was started in 1966. A new board room was also completed this same year. Through the kindness of 'the late Grace and Stewart Middleton, two solariums and two sundecks were added to the south end of both the first and second floors of the hospital and were officially, opened on May 12, 1971. 1972 brought more changes to the hospital when one ward ' and one 'semi- . private room was designated as a chronic wing. . In 1974 the hospital was wired for cable TV and the laundry facilities were' updated. Douglas Coventry joined the staff of Clinton hospital in, April of 1974 as administrator and retired in March of 1984. He was suc- ceeded' ' by Dari ' Steyn ` the current ad- ministrator. Kathleen Elliott retired in 1975 from her position of nine years as director of nursing' with Barbara Cooper taking over for a short time. In its efforts to reduce the high cost of medicare in 1976, the provincial government considered the consolidation of several rural hospitals.' 'Clinton's hospital was among, those slated to be closed. Fortunate- ly, it was proven to be an unqualified judge- ment, and the plan to close the hospital was abandoned. The year 1978 brought extensive renova- tions to the fire safety system. This same year Jean Cox became director of nursing and still holds this position today. Next up, the 1980s.
