The 4 -Ii members judge classes Each time we buy an article whether large or small, costly or inexpensive, we should be making a conscious effort to judge its suitability, its quality and its worth. On Thursday, September 19th, 90 4-H members from Huron, Perth,. Middlesex, Elgin, Oxford, Kent :and Essex counties did just that. They met at the Talbotyille Livestock Exchange for a morning of judg- ing. Classes of soybeans, dairy cows, market steers, blue jeans, school lunL,ies. were judged and general quizzes • were answered. After a busy morning, 4-14 members went on to the Plowing Match while behind the scenes: people tabulated results in order to have awards ready to hand out at the even- ing banquet. Huron County Award went to Jeff Gein- niell - junior winner of .the identification quiz. Congratulations! All 'other 21 4-H members from Huron put forth a very gond effort as well. The event was sponsored by Pioneer Hi - Bred Ltd. and the Ontario Ministry • of Agriculture and Food. Dateline Wednesday, September 25 - North Huron 4-H Vet Club Meeting. ( Alan Rivett photo) 'Validation tags for deer increases this. year' The number of yalidation tags sent to deer hunters in Ontario this year has increased by almost one-third over 1984, Natural Resources Minister Vincent Kerrio said recently. More than 36,700 deer hunting validation tags were mailed to sportsmen across the province on Sept. 3. "Tho increase in tags issued corresponds to the increasing number of deer in Ontario," Kerrio said, -"The growth in deer herds can , be attributed to moderate winters, as well as to your selective deer harvest program, now in its -sixth year. The validation tags are issued annu-illy tib, the Ministry of Natural Resources to control the number of antlerless deer - females and fawns - taken .during the season. MNR allocates the tags on the basis of a random draw, held this year on Aug. 23. Provincially, a hunter had a better than 50 per cent chance of receiving a tag in 1985. The number of tags issued to hunters in the traditional central .Ontario deer range was up nearly 60 per cent. "The fact that 68,697 hunters entered this year's draw - an increase of 8,775 applicants over 1984 - indicates the continued popularity of deer hunting as an outdoor recreation activity," he said. • Colleen Gower leads 4 -Hers The Clinton I 4-H •Clubi.held their first meeting on September 9 at the home of Pat„ Saundercock.
