Money well spent
With the resignation of Clinton's recrea-
tion director, the question of whether the
town really needs a recreation director,
arises. Some believe the job should be left
vacant while others feel it should be filled as
soon as possible.
What role does a recreation director play''
in a small town?
According to a 1984 recreation newsletter,
a recreation director's role in a small town
is to "administer, direct, prepare, organize,
maintain and evaluate recreation facilities
and programs that serve the comrnfinity.' •
The list goes on, noting that a recreation
director administers the overall work of the
department, directs the acquisition of equip-
ment, planning, construction and improve-
ment to all facilities.
On the financial side, a recreation direc-
tor is responsible for preparing the budget
and overlooking all department expen-
ditures, revenues and fiscal operations.
Another, important job that affects the
people within the community, is the organiz-
ing, directing and controlling of all recrea-
tion program activities.
Some people may believe that organizing
program is simple, but there are steps
which must be followed in order to niake the
programa success:
-find out if there is any interest in the pro-
gram. One or two people can not support an
entire program.
From the stands
4ind an instructor who is willing to teach the •
course.
-find a location that is suitable for the activi-
ty.
-make sure the required equipment is
available.
-look into grants to see if the cost of any
given program can be subsidized.
-schedule the program so it won't interfere
with otheractivities.
-arrange registration.
The recreation director's job is not done
after registration. He, or she, must oversee
the program to be sure it is running
smoothly and then, prepare an evaluation on
the program.
Clinton has had all of the above looked
after by its recreation director and
facilities' manager. The facilities are in
good shape, the programs are varied and
well run.
By Anne Mgrejko
During the recreation committee meeting
in September, it was estimated that 11%456
people used the town hall auditorium, arena
and community park, various programs,
the pool and playground during an eight
month period. Although some of these peo-
ple may be repeats, it shows that the town is
offering something they like.
A breakdown of the numbers show that
3,387 people used the town hall; 89,501 used
the arena and community park; 2,643 took
part in the programs; 14,455 used the pool
and 2,470 took part in playground.
Because the public demands more than
hockey during the winter months and.
baseball in the summer, it is necessary to
have a recreation director to organize and
look after the programs correctly. The
recreation director'q salary is money well
spent.
