LOOKING BACK THROUGH THE NEWS -RECORD

AN ACCIDENT - While unloading iron at
the Grand Trunk station one day last week
Bert Langley had his ankle so injured as to
lay hirci up for a few days. His father,
Charles Langley went to his assistance and
had two or three. of his fingers badly smash-
ed. Lock Cree, who is one of the most oblig-
ing of men, also "gave a hand" and received
a jammed finger.
GODERICH TOWNSHIP - Most in-
teresting services were held last Sunday at
benezer Church in the Maitland conces-
ion when the church was reopened after
having been freshly painted, papered,
shingled and otherwise repaired and
renovated. Two services were held, after-
noon and evening. Rev. Baugh of Benmiller
preached on both occasions.
• Fifty years ago, this church was erected
for the worship of God and through all those
years it has stood the centre of the religious
life of the community. Very few of the
original members are now living.
HULLETT PEAS - While the experience
of most of our farmers is that, the pea crop is
not a success, that has not been the case
with John Carbert who has had 20 bushels to
the acre. This, Albert Morrell, the veteran
thresher says is the record holder for this
season.

DANGEROUS DRIVING .The shoulders
of the cement pavement are being smoothed
off this week with a tar and gravel mixture.
A good thing too. It gives a car a bad wrench
and might easily result in an accident when
a wheel slips off the pavement, dropping a
couple of inches to the shoulder. •
WET DAY FOR FIELD DAY - The Clin-
ton Collegiate meeting was held on
September 16. With the consistent irony of
gonaturs, the 15th and 17th were beautiful
days, but the 16th was delightfully damp.
The sports were held in the (comparatively )
dry afternoon. Isabel Colquhoun was cham-
pion with 19 points in the junior girl's events.
Kenneth Cooke came out on top in the
juvenile boys with 25 points. Bob Draper
was junior boys' champion with 31 points.
Intermediate girls' and boys' champions
were Olive Finch with 20 points and Ross
Finch who had 35 points. Norma Cook and
Violet Fremlin tied for senior girls' cham-
pion with 17 points each and Bob Passmore
was the senior boys' champion with 30
po mts.
BARN FIRE - A fire that started at four
o'clock Tuesday in the barn on the farm of
Harold Montgomery., , Concession 5,
Goderich Township, resulted in the total loss
of the building. grain,' stock and im-
elements•• Daroa-ge is estimated to be in the
thousands of dollars. The loss is partially
covered by insurance.
Shingles on the.house and in a neighbor's
strawstack were ignited by sparks, but -were
saved by the efforts of neighbors. Windows
in the house were shattered by the intense
heat.
Included in the loss were 100 tons of hay,
2,000 bushels of grain, 16 pigs, 10 calves and
a horse and farm implements.

DALES WIN IN BLYTH - William J. Dale
of RR 1, Clinton won all the major ribbons at
the first Guernsey regional show staged in
connection with the 93rd annual Blyth Fall
Fair, September 21.
Mr. Dale won the grand champion,
reserve female ribbon, grand champion,
reserve male, the senior and junior and
reserve ribbons in the female class. The
show, open to the counties of Huron, Lamb -
ton, Middlesex and Elgin, drew 40 entries.
COUNTY PONDERS PROJECT - Pro-
posal for a free library system in Huron
County has received consideration by
several meetings during the past few days.
However, a special meeting of the Clinton
Library Board came to the decision that
they were not ready to take part in the new
plan, because not sufficient information was
available on what it would really mean.
WHAT TIME IS IT? - Annual commotion
over change from Daylight Saving Time has
begun. Several towns in southern Ontario
changed back to Standard time last week.
Clinton, and as far as known, all of Huron
County will remain on Daylight Saving
Time until October 30.

GAUNT, RIDDELL WIN - Liberal Mur-
ray Gaunt was swept back into office in the
provincial election with a landslide victory
over PC Bill Walden and NDP candidate Dr:
Don Milne in the Huron -Bruce riding.
Incumbent MPP Jack Riddell had little
trouble winning the riding of Huron -
Middlesex. Thefinal tally showed Mr. Rid-
dell with .11,963 votes, nearly 4,000 votes
ahead of PC Jim Hayter who gathered 8,106
and the NDP's Paul Carroll, whose support
slipped to 2,008.
A FUTURE CANADIAN QUEEN? -
Joanne Palmer, 18, of Clinton is heading for
the Miss Dominion of Canada contest next•
year. Miss Palmer, the daughter of Dr. and .
Mrs. D.B. Palmer was picked Miss Mid-
• Western Ontario last . weekend at the
I.ucknow Fair. It will be the first tirne Clin-
ton has had a contestant in the national
finals. Miss Palmer was Clinton's Centen-
nial Queen.

Do we need free trade...
• from page 4
Because of the complexity and ingenuity
-of non -tariff barriers, it is unlikely that
these barriers would be materially affected
by reducing or eliminating tariffs. The only
way many of these non -tariff barriers to
trade can be significantly 'reduced is
through negotiations by trading partners.
Free trade with the United States and
other countries could be advantageous to
Canadian agriculture if. (1) a reasonably
accurate estimate , tlf gains and losses is
established, (2) winners and losers ,are
.identified and (3) an acceptable system•of
distributing net gains among winners and
losers is developed. In addition, effective
procedures to deal with non -tariff barriers
. would he required. Even if all the foregoing
criteria are met, 'it cannot be assumed that
Canada would be a net winner in a free trade
situation with the United States. ,
