His father, Charles Langley went to his assistance and had two or three. of his fingers badly smash- ed. Lock Cree, who is one of the most oblig- ing of men, also "gave a hand" and received a jammed finger. GODERICH TOWNSHIP - Most in- teresting services were held last Sunday at benezer Church in the Maitland conces- ion when the church was reopened after having been freshly painted, papered, shingled and otherwise repaired and renovated. Two services were held, after- noon and evening. Rev. Baugh of Benmiller preached on both occasions. • Fifty years ago, this church was erected for the worship of God and through all those years it has stood the centre of the religious life of the community. Very few of the original members are now living. This, Albert Morrell, the veteran thresher says is the record holder for this season. 50 years ago - September 26, 1935 DANGEROUS DRIVING .The shoulders of the cement pavement are being smoothed off this week with a tar and gravel mixture. A good thing too. It gives a car a bad wrench and might easily result in an accident when a wheel slips off the pavement, dropping a couple of inches to the shoulder. • WET DAY FOR FIELD DAY - The Clin- ton Collegiate meeting was held on September 16. With the consistent irony of gonaturs, the 15th and 17th were beautiful days, but the 16th was delightfully damp. The sports were held in the (comparatively ) dry afternoon. Isabel Colquhoun was cham- pion with 19 points in the junior girl's events. Kenneth Cooke came out on top in the juvenile boys with 25 points. Bob Draper was junior boys' champion with 31 points. Intermediate girls' and boys' champions were Olive Finch with 20 points and Ross Finch who had 35 points. Norma Cook and Violet Fremlin tied for senior girls' cham- pion with 17 points each and Bob Passmore was the senior boys' champion with 30 po mts. The loss is partially covered by insurance. Shingles on the.house and in a neighbor's strawstack were ignited by sparks, but -were saved by the efforts of neighbors. Windows in the house were shattered by the intense heat. Included in the loss were 100 tons of hay, 2,000 bushels of grain, 16 pigs, 10 calves and a horse and farm implements. 25 years ago - - September 29, 1960 DALES WIN IN BLYTH - William J. Dale of RR 1, Clinton won all the major ribbons at the first Guernsey regional show staged in connection with the 93rd annual Blyth Fall Fair, September 21. Mr. Dale won the grand champion, reserve female ribbon, grand champion, reserve male, the senior and junior and reserve ribbons in the female class. The show, open to the counties of Huron, Lamb - ton, Middlesex and Elgin, drew 40 entries. COUNTY PONDERS PROJECT - Pro- posal for a free library system in Huron County has received consideration by several meetings during the past few days. However, a special meeting of the Clinton Library Board came to the decision that they were not ready to take part in the new plan, because not sufficient information was available on what it would really mean. WHAT TIME IS IT? - Annual commotion over change from Daylight Saving Time has begun. Several towns in southern Ontario changed back to Standard time last week. Clinton, and as far as known, all of Huron County will remain on Daylight Saving Time until October 30. 10 years ago - September 25, 1975 GAUNT, RIDDELL WIN - Liberal Mur- ray Gaunt was swept back into office in the provincial election with a landslide victory over PC Bill Walden and NDP candidate Dr: Don Milne in the Huron -Bruce riding. Incumbent MPP Jack Riddell had little trouble winning the riding of Huron - Middlesex. Thefinal tally showed Mr. Rid- dell with .11,963 votes, nearly 4,000 votes ahead of PC Jim Hayter who gathered 8,106 and the NDP's Paul Carroll, whose support slipped to 2,008.
