brussels dam officially opened
By Stephanie Levesque
The historical Brussels Dam, restored by
the Maitland Valley Conservation Authori-
ty, was officially opened by the traditional
ribbon -cutting ceremony and the not so
traditional waterfowl release.
About 300 people from across the Maitland
watershed gathered on the front lawn of the
Logan Mill in Brussels on Wednesday, Sept.
4. While the general public and students
from nearby Brlussels public school listened
to dignataries speak, dark clouds threaten-
ed overhead. however, the only water flow-
ing was from the Maitland River.
Brussels Reeve Cal Krauter said the old
data was in terrible shape and his political
colleagues agreed that the new dam added
an attractiveness to the village.
Huron -Bruce MP Murray Cardiff spoke on
the history of the dam. Reading from an
1880's edition of The Brussels Post, Cardiff
noted the wooden dam on the site was built
in 1860 to power the flour and grist mill of a
W. Vanstone.
In 1911 the mill was destroyed by fire and
sold to the Logan family. Three years late a
new grist mill was built and concrete poured
over the wooden dam.
It was 52 years later when the milling
business was closed in 1967. In 1972, the con-
servation authority bought both the mill and
darn from James Logan.
The reeve of the neighboring township,
Leona Armstrong commented that it was
thought no funds would ever be available to
fix up the old dam.
However, MVCA chairman Vince Judge
of Listowel and others said Cardiff was a
great help in finding federal money for the
project. Former general -manager Bryan
Howard was also credited with finding pro-
vincial and federal government money.
Although no longer general -manager,
(Howard who has accepted a position with
the Ontario Heritage Foundation), was on
hand for the opening.
The federal government provided $372,000
for the project. The Village of Brussels paid
$4,000 for a preliminary engineering study,
and $5,000 for lights and a picnic shelter on
the six -acre site. The village also paid
$23,000 for silt removal from the river bed
and easements.
The provincial government, through the
ministry of natural resources contributed
$25,000 to the project.
C[ardiff, Mr. Judge, Reeve Krauter and
Bi4Yssels representative on the MVCA.
Bruce McCall took part in the ribbon -cutting
ceremony. These men, along with a
ministry of natural resources represen-
tative released six Mallard ducks to mark
the opening of the dam. The ducks had been
trapped earlier in the day by ministry per-
sonnel at the Hullet wildlife management
area for banning purposes.

Harborrevitalization continues
A new wharf will be constructed and a slip
dredged to provide a berthing facility for
loading salt products onto ships at Goderich
harbor, the Honorable Roch La Salle,
Minister, Public Works Canada, announced
recently.
The $5,307,755 contract for dredging and
wharf construction was awarded by Public
Works Canada on behalf of Transport
Canada to Cartier -McNamara Corporation,
Whitby, who submitted the lowest of seven
bids received in response to a public tender
call.
The project is a continuation of the
general harbor revitalization project
started last year. Work is scheduled to be
completed by the spring of 1986.
The new wharf, measuring approximate)
800 m x 75 m, will be located beside the nort
side of the Domtar Salt mine. To be con-
structed of granular fill, quarried rock, rein-
forced concrete, steel, it will be paved with
asphalt. Rubber fenders will protect dock-
ing vessels.
Also under this contract, the adjacent slip
will be dredged to seaway leve, Approx-
imately 190,000 m3 of Class 'B' material
(sand, silt, small boulders) will be removed.
Dredging this slip will allow vessels to load
to full capacity while still docked.
Plans and specifications were prepared
by Public Works Canada and the project
manager is T.E. Douglas, Public Works
Canada, London.
