Bateman designs
new stamp
Canada's first Wildlife Habitat Con-
servation Stamp is now available from the
Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters
(OFAH), Ontario's largest provincial con-
servation organization. All revenue
generated by the Federation's sale of the
stamp and a limited edition print of the •
stamp design, will be used to protect wildlife
habitat in Ontario.
The original artwork for the stamp was
painted by internationally renouned Cana-
dian wildlife artist and conservationist,
SRobert Bateman. Entitled Mallard Pair -
Early Winter, it depicts a hen and drake in a
wetland setting. As the first stamp inthe
series to be issued annually by
Habitat Canada, it is expected to sell out
quickly to conservationists, the general
public and collectors. Additional money will
be raised by requiring hunters to purchase
the $4 stamp when they buy a migratory
game bird permit.
The OFAH will take orders for the signed,
numbered, limited edition print which
ranges in price from $195 to $2,500 depen-
ding upon the edition and package selected.
For more information on the stamp or
print, or to place an order, contact Ontario
Federation of Anglers and Huinters, Box 28,
Peterborough, Ontario, K9J 6Y5, (705) 748-
6324.

Millions of hunters and others interested
in the behavior and lore of North America's
favorite big game animal - the whitetail
deer - now have an opportunity to study
whitetails in depth without so much as set-
ting foot into the deer's natural domain.
A pair of new video cassette tapes, Way of
the Whitetail and Successful Whitetail Deer
Hunting produced by 3M in association with
the National Rifle Association's Public
Education and Hunter Services Division and
011) The Remington Arms Company, were
released in July. Both will be available for
purchase or rental through better sporting
goods stores, video rental facilities and
related outlets.
"These two new tapes are highly infor-
mative for hunters and non -hunters alike,"
says Howard West, Project Manager, 3M
Leisure Time Products. "They reflect the
same professional production standards and
attention to detail that have made 3M's
highly acclaimed Sportsman's Video Collec-
tion of fishing, hunting and retriever train-
ing tapes so popular."
West also says he is especially pleased
that 3M was able to rely on the expertise and
advice of two of America's premier hunting
related organizations - NRA and Remington
- in producing the new tapes.
Way of the Whitetail is directed towards
naturalists, hunters, photography buffs,
students and related audiences. It captures
the majestic nature of this intriguing animal
and the excitement of searching for and
observing it in its natural element. Special
focus examines the relationship of deer and
predator, deer behavior during the fall rut-
ting season and environmental factors af-
fecting population. It deals in-depth with the
behavior and biological aspects of this great
animal.
Way of the Whitetail dispells several com-
mon myths about deer habits, their senses
and sport hunters. Emphasis is placed on
the common goal shared by hunters and
non-huntersalike: the health and well being
of the deer population.
The second tape Successful Whitetail
Deer Hunting is for the sport hunter who
wants to increase his hunting success
through a broader lgiowledge of whitetail
behavior. The viewer learns how to use
knoweldge of deer behavior during and after
the rutting season (gained from "Way of the
Whitetail") to develop new and more effec-
tive hunting strategies.
"In developing new educational programs
in recent years," Adkins adds, "NRA has
become increasingly aware of the value of
audio-visual information and entertain-
ment, particularly in the form of videotape.
When we heard 3M was producing a series
of tapes dealing with game species and hun-
ting techniques, we saw it as an . excellent
opportunity to become involved in a wor-
thwhile project. The NRA is particularly in-
ay Stave Cooke
terested in getting the wildlife management
message to the general public and in em-
phasizing hunting technique and ethical
behavior to the sports hunters among us."
Remington Arms, America's oldest gun
maker, has been looking at video program-
ming in recent years as a natural extension
to its educational Remington Film Library.
"We see video as an effective means of
favorably exposing people - especially
young people - to the enjoyment of hunting
and shooting," says Jerry Quinn of Rem-
ington's Marketing Communications
Department. "At Remington, we've long
been involved in programs that emphasize
how the hunting and shooting sports can pro-
vide a lifetime of fun and quality outdoor ex-
periences that can't be duplicated in any
other way."
"Hunting really is a year round activity,"
Quinn says. "Even in the off season, hunters
like to plan for the next hunt, think about
past hunts, learn more about equipment and
game species, and sharpen their skills.
That's where VCRs and videotapes corn in.
Co -sponsoring the new whitetail tapes with
3M was a natural fit."
Both Way of the Whitetail and Successful
Whitetail Deer Hunting were produced for
Leisure Tim Products - 3M by Jerry Chiap-
petta, well known outdoor writer and film
maker. Scenes were shot in upper central
Pennsylvania, Michigan's lower peninsula
and in Wisconsin and South Dakota, but app-
ly as well to Ontario's deer herds.
Fifty-eight Minutes in length, each tape is
available in either Beta or VHS format for
$69.95 US. It's expensive, but if it was shared
by a deer hunting gang, it would be only $10
each and could prove well worth that the
first season out.

when the tick sucks blood causes the moose
to rub or scratch. As a result, an affected
moose has numerous bald patches that
leave its skin exposed to cold and wet
weather during the winter months. The
moose in the Alfred Bog in eastern Ontario
have been subject to serious tick attacks, as
have the moose east of Thunder Bay and in
the Swastika/Cochrane area. As the size of
the province's moose herd increases, the
tick problems may grow as well.
