She will be racing in front of a hometown crowd in Clinton on August 11. Above, HF Alice makes her way around the Greenwood Raceway in Toronto with driver Ray McLean driving. By Anne Narejko DUNDAS - Clinton's Bill Fleming's three- year-old pacing filly has harness racing fans sitting up and taking, notice after setting a Canadian record for her age, sex and gait on a half mile track. "She was last at the half and was still last going into the paddock turn. Then Ray (driver Ray McLean) pulled her out down the backstretch. She got cover so she had the perfect mile cut out for her. But we cer- ' tainly didn't expect that kind of mile at this • stage of the game," Mr. Fleming told a Lon- don Free Press reporter. HF (Huron Farms) Alice set the new record of 1:57.4 at Flamboro Downs on July 13. The previous record was 1:58.2. HF Alice, trained by George Elliott of Clinton, is the daughter of Tarport Count and Karina Hanover. Last year she had three starts, winning two and taking second place in the other race. Some changes have been made to improve HF Alice's racing performances. Last fall she had an operation on her left front ankle and this year she wears a hood and has her ears plugged. Mr. Fleming believes that plugging her ears has made her relax. "As a matter of fact, you even have to get after her now. At Orangeville she almost lost it because she was losing interest," he said. Before, HF Alice was very excitable and was not a favorite with the drivers. But Ray McLean took the reins in Leamington where she took a bit of a jump vvarmiqg up. They then put a hood on her, tore some bandages and plugged her ears. On July 7, HF Alice defeated five other Ontario Sires Stakes competitors to win with a time of 2:01.4. She finished a quarter length ahead of Dee Dee Splurge and Arm- bro Delight. She also won an Ontario Sires Stakes race at Leamington with a time of 2:00.3. HF Alice continued her winning ways on July 22 at Greenwood Raceway. She won the race in 1:59.6 and then competed again five days later, winging with a time of 1:57.6. With these two races, HF Alice's lifetime earnings were boosted to $43,487. keeps improving "She was kind of impressive last year," said trainer George "Butch" Elliott. "But we didn't expect her to set the record at Flamboro." Mr. Elliott has been training horses for 25 years and started training HF Alice when she was a yearling. Over the two year period he has seen steady improvement in the horse. "After the third or fourth start her times get faster and faster. In Flamboro she hit her peak and I think she's at her peak now," commented Mr. Elliott. According to HF Alice's trainer, she per- forms better when she's fresh. "Every horse is different, and she's the type of horse that doesn't like too much heavy training. If she gets too much, she won't race well," Mr. Elliott said.
