CE[AIiITAl3LE INSTITUTIONS.
The provincial inspector of chart-
table institutions, :Ar. Chamberlain,
in a statement he has prepared,
shows that there are thirty-oneST.
charitable institutions in Toronto,
exclusive of the asylum, receiving
$5,208,24 from the Government; and
last year 2,571 persons were cared
for in them. As far as he can ascer-
fain, he says, the city aids twenty-
seven of them to the extent of $65,-
608.06, and in addition to this
spent last year $11,000 for outdoor
relief work, making a total of $76,-
608.07 spent for charitable pure
poses. In the other towns and
cities of the province there are 101
similar institutions, which cared for
4,286 inmates last year, and re-
coined $117,00.`3.05 from the Gov-
eminent, and thus, Dr. Chamberlain
points out, it will be seen that To-
ronto gets more money in proper-
tion from the Government than the
province as a whole.

suggested that each employe of the
factory be given 160 acres of set-
lands on the usual terms, and
the factory, throughwood these, the
allowed to get the from

the request consideration.
A deputation from Victoria County

The ilraggin:g and bumping of the
passenger coach caused the other
cars to leave the emcee and for ful-
ly three hfu>redred yards the whole
train, except the engine, was trem-
bung on the edge of a ten -foot em-
bankment, It was doubtless owing
to titis fact that so few of the pas-
senors were dangerously wounded,
as they all were warted of danger
and had prepared themselves for the
shock.
• OVER TEB) TRESTLE.
The crippled train at last reached
a low trestle •bridge, crossing a
small creek; which was swollen by
the spring rains. The tottering bag-
gage and snxeealting Gaxs pitched off
the trestle into the water, and
dragged the passenger coach down
with them, all three cars rolling
over on their sides, and resting in
swift -running water from four to
ileo feet in depth. The shock was
so severe that the.smoker and the
risen er ooaah split open, the seats
broke from. their fastenings, surf. the
terror-stricken passengers were
thrown in a struggling heap• into theFour
water.
Mr. and Mrs, :Helston and. their

breaking a hole in the door and
smashing the upper windows, and

A number of farmers living near
