Mooe County By Wiley McPhee HI,, - Side splitting laughter, deafen- ing appij e,- a rollicking good time and a co:ilter#Eiary message are all part of the &iyth estival's Moose (County. The play is ,destined to be a season hit - judging by the full house audience that filled the Melmorfal Hall in Blyth on June 29. Simply, the audience loved the play. They stopped the seenes with laughter and applause. They provided toe -tapping ac- companiment to the between the scenes music. They heartily encored the cast and gave them a standing ovation. And when the audience Ieft the theatre, they were talking about a great evening' entertainment. A madcap script 'by playwright Colleen Curran and energetic performances by the six cast members provided a solid base for Moose County. Curran successfully takes a controversial topic - the use of potentially dangerous pesticides in agriculture - and manages to turn it into a crazy comedy, with a message. Teresa Pond (Diana Belshaw) is a teacher, a farm wife and mother who's dedicated to the fight against use of chemicals. Her aim is to make Moose Coun- ty agriculturally organic. Her cause meets more than its share of obstacles. Husband Graeme ( Peter Smith) uses the chemicals on his crops. Fourteen -year-old daughter, Kitty ( Nancy Roberts) is embar- rassed about all the negative attention cast on her family. There's the town busybody •Fern Hutton (Eleanor Yeoman), Teresa's city friend Norah Fiedler (Marianne MclSaac) and there's the moose. It's Moose Week in the town of Logan, °a first ever annual event in honor of the moose that wandered into town 25 years ago. It's an event that's destined to bring tourism and economic wealth to the little town. There are moose hats, moose mugs, moose ban- ners, moose festivities and a giant moose statue to be unveiled - all courtesy of King of Canada Chemicals - makers of. the pesticides that Teresa's protesting. There's boycott and march on Moose Week, a political scandal involving Fern's son, some romance and lots of laughs in this zany comedy. Performances in . Moose County are all solid and the'six actors portray their comic characters with boundless enthusiasm. Special mention must go to Robert King who plays the vet. King is a familiar face to Blyth audiences, having performed in Blue City, Country Hearts and Garrison's Garage last season. He has t:stablished himself as a favorite comic actor on the Blyth Festival stage and his performance irr Moose County is no exception. For the Saturday night audience at the Memorial Hall,, Moose County was a hit.
