collision of two east bounGrand d
Trunk freight tr ins occurte at 1
o'clock Sunday morning just soppo-
site ilia station platform.
An east bound. freight, Engine at47,
was at the station .pricking up a
couple of cars when, without warn-
ing, another east bound train, En-
gine 755, crashed into the rear of
the standing cans.
Davtd J. McGuire, the *award
brakeman of the second train, was
(Wiled, the engine WAS derailed and
half • a dozen cars were completely
destroyed. The escape of the engi-
neer and fireman is a little short of
miraculous. 'Both crawled through
the cab window to safety after the
locomotive had coals to a standstill
iia the ditch.
They say that Agent Albertson
sought to signal the train with his
lantern, • but without effect. The en-
gineer on the other hand claims that
there were no signals against thein,
The first freight was shunting cars
on the siding when the second train,
hewing down the grade at 40 miles
an hour, collided with the standing
cars. Neither the engineer nor the
fireman could have seen the train
ahead, ; or the probability is that
they would have jumped. The weight
of the heavy grain cars adjoining
the locomotive sent it oil the rails,
which accounts for the comparative-
ly small amount of damage inflicted
upon the standing train. The ca-
boose of the latter was smashed in
to kindling wood. -
McGuire was at his post close to
the engine when the collision occur-
red. He was probably signalling
with his lantern to the rear end
brakeman and 1lad no warning of
the danger into which he was rush-
ing.
ushing. Death must, have been almost
instantaneous. ire was found under
the engine wedged into the corn
which filled the car adjacent to the
engine. There was little or no ap-
parent injury to the body. Daniel
McGuire was smothered in the corn.
His body was removed to the sta-
tion, and later to Undertaker
Youngs.
Coroner Williams . empanelled a
jury during the afternoon. and
next Tuesday an effort will
be made to fix the responsibility for
the man's death. McOuire was in
the accident at Merxitton and escap-
ed without a bruise. His parents live
in Merritton, and the victim is single
and lives with his sister.
official store of wreak.
Y.
The official account of the accident
states that one extra east. train, en-
gina 507, was :landing at Oakville
station at 1.10 nen. Saturday, when
it was run into by another extra
east. The front end brakeman, D.
J, McGuire, was caught in jumping,
and was found dead under the en-
gine. Seven or eight cars were de-
railed, and the corn with which they
were loaded was spilled along the
track.
The cause of the accident was the
second 'train running by the sema-
phore set at danger. No reason can
be assigned for this, as several wit-
nesses were sure that the danger sig-
nal was set,
The track was soon cleared, and
traffic was not delayed. -

Stock Tonic.
James Leask, breeder and feeder of
the sweepstake fat cattle at Provincial
WinterFair 1901 and 1902, says :
Dear Sir: -
I have fed your Stock Tonic to.
cattle and like it very much. It mak-
es them thrive well and put on flesh
more rapidly. I think it is the best
Tonic I have fed. to horses. We are
also feeding it to our hens this winter
and they are Iaying better than they
have done for a long time, It pays
to feed it. Yours truly,
JAarES LEASE,
Greenbank P, 0., Feby, 28, 1903.
Dear Sir: -
I bad a mare stocked in both
legs, WORTRXNGTON's STOCK FOOD
took it down completely and put her
in good condition. It has done my
cows good, Think it is a good thing
and can recommend it.
