The little things yourememer about classmates...
From page 21
When he got to swearing things almost
turned blue.
But Bill quit school early, e'er spring got
too late,
To work Allen's farm, driving Ge, Ge, Ge,
Geordie and Kate,
Lathe Pickard was there and so was Jane
Ross,
But Jane has departed and we all feel the
loss.
Jane always was pleasant and full of good
cheer,
Yet today she shines brighter than when
she was here.
Four Chesneys came from the third farm to
the West
But one of that number had gone to her
rest.
Jennie at school was both thoughtful and
gay,
When I started to write 'twas my fullest
intention
To go over each name, making much
further mention,
But quickly discovered what an ocean of
space
It would take if we gave ail our schoolmates
a place.
Some may be omitted who would willingly
say
That they went to school in Tun Laidlaw's
day.
While the young I have mentioned may feel
rather sore
That they should be classed with my school
days of yore.
As we think of the many who have passed
from our view,
Do you not think, yes, is it not true?
That they were the cream and we were the
milk,
Or we, coarse as cotton, and they as silk.
She was ready for study or ready for play.
If we patiently wait until some further day
She will be there to greet us just over the
way.
Nick Kehoe, one winter from Pickard's he
came;
Louise Parker and Lizzie we must claim;
Jim Doig and Bob, then came Maggie and
Paul,
Kate and Jack, the two youngest have
answered the call.
W e will see them again when our lives have
matured,
W hen Sorrows and afflictions have all been
endured.
Jack Chesney and Shorty, as the boys used
to shout,
Was about seven feet long and not very
stout.
Tom Jordan was there, when at Cleary's he
stayed,
Of snow storms and cold, Tom was never
afraid.
Then many were younger, but sure not
forgotten,
Such as Jennie and Maggie, and Johnnie
McNaughton.
Gid Hyslop and Jennie strolled by on their
way,
But Ida and Ralph did not go in my day.
Maud Grummett and Shell had come on
life's stage,
But when I left that line they were under
school age.
The Downs were quite stout but not very
tall,
Jennie Sproat and Barbara in my day were
quite small.
John Murray's family at that time were
quite young;
While Jim Sproats children to the home
fires still clung.
