Blood Was streaming from a deep stab in his left side, high up, He was as very barge ele- phant with long and fairly thick tusks. His opponent must have been a Goliath to have worsted hizn. This tusker presented a picture of rage and power, as he mowed the bam- boos down with trunk and tusks, and trampled - them with his fore- feet. Suddenly his whole demeanor changed. He backed from the clump and 5,food like a statue. II'e had scented us. The next moment for- ward went his ears and up wont his tail, and in the same instant he wheeled and bore straight down upon us with astonishing speed, The bamboos behind which we stood were useless as cover, and I stepped out into the open to get a clear shot. I gave a shout, hoping to stop or turn him, but in vain, I fired when ho was nine paces dis- tant, feeling confident of the shot, but I made a mistake in not giving hila both harrels. The smoke mo- mentarily obscured the elephant, and I bent down to see where he lay. Good gracious ! He had not even been checked, and was upon me 1 There was no time to step to the right or the left, Itis tusks carne through the smoke like the cow- catcher of a locomotive, and I had just time to fall fiat to avoid being hurled along in front of him. I fell a little to the right ; the next in- stant clown came his ponderous fore- foot within a few inches of my left thigh, and I should have been trodden on had I not hastily drawn my leg back from the sprawling position in winch I had fell. As he rushed over me he shrieked shrilly, but fortunately he went on, for had he stopped there was no way of es- cape for me. I was covered with blood from the wound inflicted by his late antagonist. This was one of the closest calls I ever had in the wild life of the jungle. A young man by the name of Wil- liam Kota, coachman, caned to my stoic, complaining that his feet hurt hint very badly, He had in vain tried to get relief by consulting phy- eicinns, Being exposed a great deal to the bold by his occupation, his feet got worse daily, until one day he fainted in the street. RULES FOR THE SICK ROOM. Here are a few rules for the sick room that ere worth remembering; Never allow a patient to take the temperature himself. Many patients are more knowing than nurses when there is a question of tennperature. Never put a hot-water bottle next to the skin. Its efficiency and the patient's safety are both enhanced by surrounding the bottle with flannel. Never allow a patient to be wak- ened out of his first sleep, either in- tentionally or accidentally. Newer imagine that a patient who sleeps during the day will not sleep during the night. The more he sleeps the better he will bac able to` sleep. Never hurry or hustle. Never stand and fidget when a sick person is talking to you. Sit down. Never sit where your- patient can- not see you. • Never require a patient to repeat a message or request. Attend. at once. Never judge the condition of your patient from his appearance during the conversation. See how he looks an hour afterward. Never read a story to children if you can tell it. Never read fast to a sick person. The way to make a story seem short is to tell it slowly. Never confine a patient to one room if you can obtain the use of two. Neverallow monotony in anything, To Recognize Purity.
