Clinton News-Record, 1985-5-15, Page 110Practicai tips for your summer auto traveis Drive safely, drive carefully and have a safe trip. So many times we hear these and similar expressions as we hop in the car and hit the road. And now that summer- time is approaching, we'll probably be hear- ing them a lot more as we all gear up for sum- mer vacation. But are we really prepared for a safe trip, or is our main concern just to drive the greatest number of miles 'in the shortest amount of *time? There are ways to make the getting there a bit easier and, in fact, more enjoyable. Hopefully, the following tips will prove useful in helping you and your family have a safe -- and fun -- motoring vacation. Planning And Preparation Probably the most im- portant part of a vaca- tion is the planning and preparation: not just the hotel reservations and the sights to see when you get there, but how you get there. A CAA - AAA Trip-Tik with flip over strip maps will eliminate many of the problems and questions of where to get on, where to go, and where to get off. Even with a Trip-Tik, take the time to review it before you go and become familiar with major turn-offs you will have to make. Check Your Vehicle Now, what about your vehicle? Preventive maintenance insure that your car will always be ready for a long trip, but the vehicle should still get a special check over just before the trip. This inspection should in- clude: all engine drive belts and hoses; coolant level in the radiator (check when cold); steer- ing, suspension and front end condition (have your mechanic check these out), bat- tery, oil, transmission, power steering, brake and windshield washer reservoir fluid levels; wiper blades and tires, including.the pressure. The best tip of all is to have your car thoroughly inspected by one of CAA's approved garages. Before you even start the car, buckle your safe- ty belt and make sure everyone else in the car has theirsbuckled too. Instead of removing your safety belt when you start to feel a bit stiff and uncomfortable, stop for a few minutes at a rest area; get out of the car, and strrretch! It's not the safety belt mak- ing you uncomfortable it's the sitting. Beware of Highway Hypnosis Keep your eyes mov- ing as you drive to avoi the perils of highwa hypnosis. Using quic glances, look from the highway, to the inside rear view mirror, then use the outside rear view mirror, then back to the highway. This keeps your eyes stimulated and will also help keep you from falling asleep. If yoti feel yourself becoming drowsy, find a motel or hotel and get some rest. You may get to your destination late, but at least you'll get there alive! Children can be a distraction. Devise games for the children to play while riding in the car. LOW 'COST.
