pian soldiers, just the big shots."
John emphasizes that the German
soldiers were no different from the Dutch
soldiers. They were all ordinary men,
caught up in the horrors of war.
In fact, Nellie Van Ninhuys may be
alive today because of the efforts of Ger
man soldiers.
It Was in the fall of 1944 that a grenade
flew into the house. It struck Nellie on the
left side and it killed her sister's
dauber. Nellie's wedding dress ,was
ruined that day:
German soldiers took Nellie across the
river to hospital. She remained there,
hidden in the cellar, until the spring of
1945.
"At first," John recalls, "We didn't
know if Nellie was alive."
A German woman, married to a Dut-
chman was able to get across the river
and bring back information to the Van
Ninhuys' family that Nellie was alive.
The pain and numbness in Nellie's left
arm and hand will never allow her to
completely forget World War II.
The end of the war brought little relief
to the people. The country was
devastated, the people impoverished
John recalls. "There were no pieces to
pick up after the war."
John worked_ his vegetable garden in
thesummer months. In the winter he was
employed at a company that reclaimed
_ land from swamp areas.
