Clinton vs. Goderich
Goderich has. taken the first step in get-
ting a JNnior C hockey team. After three
months and four meetings, a committee of
local citizens have raised approximately
$10,000 in pledged support from local
businesses in hopes that their application
will be accepted by the Ontario Hockey
Association (OHA). They also have 15 local
players interested in trying out for the team.
What does this mean for the Clinton
Mustangs? Very few to no players to draw
from Goderich which would mean more im-
ported players being needed, therefore ex-
penses could go up.
It would also mean more competition for
Clinton but could only help increase their
gate receipts. Rivals, such as Goderich vs
Clinton, attract large crowds in any sport,
and hockey is no exception.
But the fact that Clinton would be losing a
few available bodies, would mean that they
would be less competitive, bringing forward
the question of remaining at the Junior C
level or going back to Junior D.
At the March 14 meeting, there were mix-
er] emotions on what the team should do in
that respect. Some felt that going back to
Junior D would be a step backwards while
others felt that if they can't be competitive
in Junior C, they should go back to Junior D.
That decision may be strongly influenced
by Goderich officially applying for a team.
I don't think Goderich is out to destroy the
Clinton franchise, but to better their own
community, and you can't blame them for
that.
Don Larder, one of the organizers in
Goderich, was quoted in the Goderich
Signal -Star as saying, "We certainly don't
want Clinton out - we want them in."
He)went op to explain why the town wants
a Junior team by saying, "We're hoping it
would draw more boys out for minor
hockey, if they had something to look for-
ward to. Right now, if they don't make Clin-
ton, they have nothing."
Everyone will be trying to guess ."what'll
happen next" but I don't think anyone can
accurately predict what effect .a Goderich
team will have on Clinton until it is decided
what level Clinton will be playing at.
