CLINTON - On March 16 the Clinton
Atoms scored a 4-2 exhibition victory over
Milverton at the Clinton Arena. Most of the
scoring was done in the first period as Clin-
ton outscored their deponents by a 3-1 score
at the end of the first stanza. Each team
traded goals in the third period to complete
the scoring.
Jason Carter and Shaun Chipehase each
scored two goals. Danny Wildfong, who
played a very strong forechecking game
earned two assists in the contest while Chris
Kennedy, Darrell Laois and Scott Rothwell
gathered one assist each.
Clinton 3 - Durham 0
On March 19 Derek Hoggarth played a
very strong game in goal for Clinton and
earned his mntl shutout of the season as the
Clinton Atoms won the first game in the best
five Western Ontario Athletic Association
(W.O.A.A.) Atom "CC" finals against a
very strong Durham_ team. The Clinton
defence led by the "Four Scotts" (Scott
Jewitt, Scott Shaddick, Scott Rathwell and
Scott Wright) played an extremely fine
defensive game in front of Hoggarth.
The first period was scoreless, but the se-
cond period belonged to Clanton as Jeff Riley
took a pass from Shaun Ciepchase and drill-
ed a wristshot in the corner at the 31 second
mark.
Jason Carter had initially started the play
and also drew an assist. At 8:33 Shaun Chip-
chas0 won the face-off deep in the Durham
zone and his high wristshot cleanly beat the
Durham goalie from the face-off circle to.
give Clinton a 2-0 lead after two periods.
In the third period with all the lines
backchecking extremely well, Jason Carter
grabbed a loose puck at centre ice while kill-
ing a penalty and broke in on a breakaway
to score an unassisted goal and sew up the
victory for Clinton.
Durham 2 - Clinton 1
At Durham on March 21 the northern crew
from Durham evened their W.O.A.A. cham-
pionship with Clinton at one game apiece
when they took a close 2-1 decision.
The first period was scoreless but in the
second period Durham's Jeff Rahn skated
out from the corner unmolested and took a
shot at Clinton goalie Robbie Marriage.
Marriage made the save but Rahn was able
to poke home the rebound and give Durham
a 1-0 lead.
In the third Aaron Arnett of Durham
scored to make it 2-0 at IA. The Clinton
boys never gave up and wifh 4:28 remain-
ing, Jason Carter fed Shaun Chipchase a
beautiful pass and Chipchase scored to nar-

assist on the goal.
With less than a minute to go m regulation
time coach Bob Livermore pulled his goalie

Clinton 5 - Durham 3

season the Clinton Atoms rallied in the third
period, scoring four goals to take a 5-3 win
and a lead m the series, two games to one.
The fourth game of the series is tonight
(March 27) in Durham at 7 p.m.
Jason Carter led the Atom attack with a
hat trick and his linemate Shaun Chipchase
added a pair.
Clinton took a 1-0 Lead in the first period as
Shaun Chipchase's neat pass from behind
the net found Jason Carter all alone in front
of the net for an easy goal.
In the second period Clinton seemed to sag
and took three minor penalties which
resulted in two powerplay goals by DL hair
who took a 2-1 lead going into the third.
At 1:44 of the third Jason Carter tied it up
on a powerplay as Shaun Chipchase fed
Carter who q ; ckly found the open corner on
a wristshot.
Again at 6:47 with Clinton on the
powerplay Shaun Chipchase scored his first
goal to give Clinton a 3-2 lead. Scott
Rathwell and Scott Wright had worked the
puck around before Chipchase's goal and
earned assists on the play. About two
minutes later, Durham came back to tie the
score at 3-3.
With 1:28 remaining Scott Jewitt's shot
from the point was tipped in by Shaun Chip -
chase to break the tie and give • Clinton the
victory.

cake and gave Clinton a 2-1 game lead in the
series for the WOAA Championship.

Clinton Bantam Bs fail to
bring home WOAA trophy
CLINTON - The Bantam B team travelled to
Wingham on March 21, hoping to bring home
the WOAA trophy. It was not to be. The
Wingham team was out to win, and win they
did by a 4-2 score,
Wingham opened the scoring at the 13:35
mark of the first period and later tallied
again at 4:37 to take a 2-0 lead at the end of
the first.
In the second, Clinton got their first goal
at 13:47 when Mike Ladd took a pass from
Rick Pickett and Tim Worthington to make
it a 2-1 score. Wingham continued to fire
check well, not allowing Clinton too many
shots.
In the third, Wingham continued their
aggressive play, scoring two quick goals to
take a 4-1 lead. The remainder of the game
saw some very scrambly hockey by both
teams. Ricky Lobb got Clinton's second goal
with only 49 seconds left in the game. Jason
MacLean assisted.
The fifth and deciding game will be played
in Clinton on Wednesday, March 27 at 6:30
p.m. Come out and support the boys.
Hockey moms play important role in
Clinton's Minor Hockey organization
CLINTON - You see them at the arena
everytime a minor hockey event is on. Some
are taking admission money, others are en-
couraging their youngsters who are on the
ice while others are trying to find a glove or
helmet that little Billy forgot.
These people are the hockey mothers who
donate much of their time to helping Clinton
Minor Hockey.
Approximately six years ago a group of
mothers formed an organization called
Hockey Morns. Three years later the group
folded due to lack of interest, however it is
now the Ways and Means and Entertain-
ment Subcommittee of the minor hockey
organization.. The Hockey Moms job re-
mains the same.
June DeRuyter has been helping out
minor hockey for three years now. She
estimates she spends at least four nights a
week at the arena, either watching her sons
play or working at the door. e
"They try to get the mother to work the
game prior to the one that their son plays.
That way they can watch their son's game,"
explained Mrs. DeRuyter's.husband, Jake.
Organizing fund raising events, tracking
down lost articles, phoning game changes
and giving children encouragement are all
part of the volunteers job.
"Coming up with fund raising ideas is a
big part of it," commented Mrs. DeRuyter.
"We are hoping to have a bake sale this year
and we had a Christmas draw for $100 in
groceries, and each year Minor Hockey
Weekend is held. There is also a minor
hockey dance that will be held on/JMarch 9
this year."
Minor Hockey Weekend was held for the
fifth consecutive year this season and is one
of the major events for the subcommittee.
Other towns have tournaments for Pee Wees
or Atoms, but Clinton is the only town in the
area which offers a weekend for all levels in
minor hockey.
As well as working at the door, mothers
are required to serve meals to the children
during the weekend. Mrs. DeRuyter stated
that they try to recruit as many mothers as
they can for the event.
Another important part of their job is to
help find equipment that a player has
forgotten. For the Clinton players, a forgot-
ten helmet or glove can be retrieved with a
phone call home or a simply shout to mom
or dad waiting in the lobby. But for an out-
of-town player, it is a major disappointment
because without all the equipment, a player
can't -take part in the game.
So it is one of the hockey moms that finds
out the size he wears and then tracks down
another pair of skates that will suffice for
the game.
Taking the time to phone players bemuse'
their game has been rescheduled or for a
scheduling change for working the door is
another task the volunteers tackle.
Jane Ladd has been volunteering her time
and energy w nunor hockey for five years.
She estimates she spends "five out of
seven" nights at the arena.
When asked why she commits so much of
her time to ,helping out, she said, "because
no one else wants to."
The DeRuyters agreed that at times it is a
struggle to get enough volunteers.
"We could use a lot more volunteers and
people with new ideas," commented Mrs.
DeRuyter. She also said that the lack of
manpower doesn't stop the Ways and Means
and Entertainment Committee. "We decide
that we're going to do something, and we do
it."
Hockey mothers - they encourage, they
discipline, they cheer. They are essential
to minor hockey, as fans and wiling
volunteers. At right are Louise Gibbings
and Barb Desch cheering their Atom boys
to victory. At left is Gerry Hiltz - a lawyer
by day, by night and on Saturdays he's a
hockey coach. Mr. Hiltz, of Clinton, is
among the dozens of men and women who
devote their free time to minor hockey.
