Permits involve building
and demolition projects
GODERICH TWP. - Thirteen building per-
mit applications were studied by Goderich
Township Council at their March 18
meeting.
The permits involved a variety of building
and demolition projects. They included:
Frank Graham, house and garage; Tielman
Westerhout, demolish a barn, storage shed,
chicken barn addition; • Jack Gilbert,
demolish shed; Keith Connolly, house
trailer addition; Winston Gibbons, imple-
ment shed; Violet Stirling, verandah;
Rodney Culp, house addition; Eleanor Scott,
house addition; Dwight Porter, remodel
house; Alike DeJohng, house; Ontario
government, renovations.
Council approved the permits, however
they stipulated that Westerhout's chicken
barn and DeJong's house permit be held,
pending the proper certification. -
Council rejected an application on file
from W.A. Ludwig and they filed another
permit application from Gordon Smith for a
new home. Clerk Robin Thompson was in-
structed to notify Mr. Smith that a zoning
change would be necessary before a
building permit could be issued for a perma-
nent residence at his proposed site, and ac-
cess would also be required to a public road.
Mr. and Mrs. Grasby met with council to
protest the water situation in the basement
of their home. Council felt that the problem
was not a municipal concern, but the reeve
and road superintendent agreed to visit the
site.
The Town and Country Homemakers are
asking for financial support from Huron
County municipalities and requested a
grant of $1,400 from Goderich Township.
Council did not approve the request, but sug-
gested that the association could use the
community centre at no charge for a fund-
raising event.
Committee wants stories
on residents and ancestors
Hall when relatives of the various families,
as well as the individual who submitted the
story, can have an opportunity of seeing the
final version of their family write-up. This
would be their opportunity to make any
changes or additions and check spelling,
etc. Watch your newspaper for further
details!
In time for the gala weekend in July (17th
to 21st) all stories will be completed and
available for final viewing. At that time in-
dividuals will have the opportunity to pur-
chase, in advance, a copy of the book for by
then the committee will be certain about the
size of the book and its price. They only plan
to print as many copies as are pre -sold dur-
ing July! •
The committee would like to . be able to
honor the 150 year old FAMILY FARMS in
the second book. This means farms that •
have stayed in the family for 150 years -
whether or not they stayed in the same sur-
name. " Often farms were passed down
through the females of the line and accor-
dingly the name of ownership changed.
These are the farms the committee would
like to ADD to the present list of 150 year
farms. If you feel that your farm qualifies
for such listing, please let someone on the
committee know as soon as possible.
The 1-5-0 Disney plates have been a real
sell-out and once again we are waiting for a
shipment. However Disney mugs are now in
and they are equally attractive. They have
file blue wagon logo imprinted on the white,
gold -rimmed coffee mug - and include the
Disney story. Their cost is $10. Copies of the
History book are available at $25. The books
and mugs will be available. Sunday after-
noon, March 31st - while orders for the
plates will be taken.
Darrell and Anne Abbott have kindly
agreed to keep some History books, plates
(when they arrive) and mugs available for
sale at the Holmesville General Store for the
convenience of those who find it hard to
make connection with the committee
members, appreciate their cooperation.
Don't forget the April 1 deadline for . at
least notifying the History book committee
about your family story. And, editors will be
available at the Holmesville Hall to help
those working on a history - March 31st, 1 to
4 p.m.
GODERICH TWP. - The April 1st deadline
for Goderich Township family histories is
fast approaching and to help those who are
having difficulty. putting their material
down on paper, the committee will hold
another helping day at the Hohnesville Hall.
On Sunday March 31, from 1 to 4 p.m. com-
mittee members will be available at the
Holmesville Hall to help anyone needing
assistance.
Some families seem to think this book is
only for the stories of present day residents
so they are not bothering to include data on
their ancestors. On the other hand, some
people have expressed the idea that since:
their family has only been in the township
for two generations there is no point in their
including a history. The committee wants
BOTH types of histories! Even if xou have
the history of a family who resided in the
township generations ago but has no family
living here now, the committee would like
their story. Both past and present families
have combined to make Goderich Township
what it is today, and the aim is to honor
these families by preserving their historical
data and stories for future generations.
So far individuals have expressed their in-
tention of submitting histories on at least 200
family names and the committee is pleased
with the way the book is progressing. On
March 31 they will bring along some com-
pleted stories so that people can see the
variety of formats that are being submitted.
All are interesting and each story is unique.
When the stories are handed in, they will
be recorded on computer file. As mentioned
in the past, each family group is entitled to
one page (double spaced 9" x 11") per
generation IN THE TOWNSHIP. This is one
standard sized page on the computer and if
individuals submit stories that are longer
than permitted editors reserve the right to
edit them accordingly. However they have
decided to add the rider that each family
PRES NTLY LIVING in the township
shouldi be permitted to provide a single
paragraph concerning their own family.
This would be in addition to the page per
generation for their ancestors. The commit-
tee felt this would allow the branches to add
a more personal touch to their histories.
Once the stories are printed out, a number
"of days will. be planned at the Hohnesville
