Neighbour's seed is no bargain
"Our neighbour grew some of that great
new feed barley last year," John told his
wife. "He's selling some of it for seed, and 1
figure that we can save over $300 buying from
him instead of getting that fancy Certified
stuff from the elevator.
Sure John, you probably will save a few
bucks on the purchase price. But there's a
good chance you'll get more than you
bargained for - like an invasion of noxious
weeds that you've spent a decade leaning
out of your land or a seed borne disease that
will cut your stand by a, third. Is it worth
gambling a few bucks on seed that carries no
assurance of quality?
Under the law, seed must not be sold by
variety name unless it is pedigreed. The
`bargain' aspect of this purchase disappears
in a hurry if any one of a multitude of
potential problems occur in John's crop.

Wise announces support levels
for corn, soybean and grain
Agriculture Minister John Wise has an-
nounced there would be no .deficiency
payments for 1983-84 crops of coni, soy-
beans, oats, and barley, because market
prices were higher than the -S established
support levels.
Com, soybeans and oats and barley grown
outside the Canadian Wheat Board (CWB)
designated area are among the nine commod-
ities named for mandatory price support
under the Agricultural Stabilization Act.
Support levels for these four commodities
were calculated by taking 90 per cent of the
five year average market price, and adding
the difference between the year's cash oast of
production and the five year average cash
cost of production.
For corn, a support price of $127.60 per
tonne was calculated, based on 90 per cent of
the five year average price of $123.00 per
tonne plus an adjustment in the cash cost of
production of $16.90 per tonne. The average
market price for corn was $159.54 per tonne.
Fir soybeans, the average market price
was $342.65. The support price was $280.44
per tonne. This is 9.p per cent of the five year
average of $274.00 per tonne, with an adjust-
ment in the cash cost of production of $33.84
per tonne.
The support price of $138.75 per tonne for
oats grown outside the CWB designated area
was lower than the weighted average market
return of $146.36. This is 90 per cent of the
five year average of $113.03 per, tonne plus a
change in the cash cost of production of
$25.72 per tonne.
The average market price of barley was
calculated at $146.25 per tonne,signifcantly
higher than the support price of $117.11. The
support price was 90 per cent of the five year
average market price of $105.40 per tonne,
with a change in the cash cost of production of
$28.56 per tonne.
Winter wheat is not a named commodity
under the Agricultural Stabilization Ad.
However if the 1983 winter wheat crop had
been considered for price support, there
would still be no payment to fanners.
