Produciion ofpredigreed seed is not just another crop
A lot of people thank that being a seed
grower is a pretty simple business. Buy a
of pedigreed seed, grow it, harvest the crop,
sell it to the neighbours, and you're in the
money.
Hold on a minute! There is a lot more to
seed production than meets the eye. Good
crop production management is part of the
package, but the grower must also comply
with a host if regulations designed to ensure
that Certified seed is true to its pedigree and
meets all the stringent requirements of the
Canadian Seed Growers' Association and the
Canada Seeds Act.
To be sure, farmers become seed growers
in hopes of generating bigger profits from
their operations. The financial rewards are
there, but only it the grower produces seed
that is of certifiable quality. Remember,
Mother Nature imposes the same harsh
disciplines on seed sops that she inflicts on
neighbouring fields. There will be times when
a seed grower's crop is rejected because it
doesn't meet the strict quality standards that
ensure you of getting the best when you
purchase Certified seed.
Pedigreed , seed producers must achieve
standards of genetic and mechanical purity
that aren't major concerns in commercial crop
production. Fbr example, seed crops have to
be isolated from the same or similar species
to prevent crossing that would invalidate the
seed crop's pedigree.
For the pedigreed seed grower, elimination
of weeds and crop 'off types' is a must. A
total seed crop can be rejected if certain
weeds, are present such as cleavers in canola
or bindweed in wheat.
Avoidance of mechanical impurities requir-
•
es considerable extra ort on the pact of the
seed grower. Crops must be continuously
monitored right through the growing season
to detect the deal with invasion of weeds, off
types, other crops, and diseases. Equipment
has to be scrupulously cleaned between fields
to prevent contamination. Separate storage of
harvested seed Pots is essential for 'tie same
reason.
With the extra diligence that is required
from initial seeding right through to final
cleaning, it seems reasonable that there
should be some ; ,ditional fmandaal reward
for producing a pedigreed seed cropl The
extra care and control required in seed
production is vital to protect the entire
pedigreed system, and thereby ensure
provision of top quality Certified seed that is
true to its variety and free from weed seeds
and diseases.
