Southern holidayers back
By Mary Chessell
VARNA - There was a good crowd again
for the Orange Lodge euchre party on
Friday 'night, with. 16 tables in play. High
and , low prizes for. men were won by Art.
Alexander and W.U. Wilson. Winners for
ladies were Elizabeth ( Laramie) Motz of
Toronto and Norene Hayter.. Draw prizes
were won by Beatrice. Welsh, -Gladys
Alexander, Annie Finkbeiner, Mary
Broadfoot, • W.D. Wilson, Janet Webster,
Sandy Pepper and Gretta Baird.
Bill and Helen. Taylor -and Arnold and
Nora Keys spent a week in Cancun, Mexico
on the Gulf of Mexico. Cancun is in the
process of development and has modern
hotels and safe water. They spent one day
touring the area and saw the pyramids at
Coba and ruins of the temple at Tulun where
the native Mexicans once worshipped.
Arnold and Nora went to the bullfights, but
thought there was less ceremony associated
with them than there would be in
-City or Spain. The day after their return,
Arnold and Nora were invited to Marge and
Don's for supper, where they had a surprise
introduction to their new grandson Michael,
who was not expected to arrive until after
they returned from Mexico.
Bill and Joyce Dowsori took some kidding
at the Pork Convention. in Toronto last week •
when they were accused of being a little
above other delegates.' Their room was on
the penthouse floor of the Harbour Castle
Inn. Bill recognized Red Fisher of TV's
Scuttlebuck Lodge in the lobby and shook
hands with him.
Bob and Elva Peck had a marvellous
month-long holiday trip in the southern
states. They, travelled through Nashville
and Birmingham to New Orleans where
they 'spent several days during Mardi Gras.
There were .beautiful parades, with huge
floats, .illuminated because the parades
were at night..Coins, strings of beads and all
sorts of things were thrown to spectators
from the floats. They took a boat cruise up
and down the Mississippi and had dinner on
the boat.
. They went on to Brownsville and ovei- to
Mexico to do some shopping, then followed
the border up to Las Cruces in New Mexico
where they visited Bob's cousin Betty and
her husband Emmitt Brooks who has a large
recording studio. They visited his uncle,
Fred' Howe in Tucson and Marlene and
Elroy Desjardihe in Yuma where they spent
several days. From there they went into ..
Mexico for a clay and toured around San
Luis and out into the country. About 'that
time a police force of five was murdered in a
small town in the area in connection with a
drug investigation. - a
From Yuma they followed the Colorado
River, up to the Parker Dam, passing
through Blythe on the way, and crossed over
to Havasu Lake where the London Bridge is,
then on to Las Vegas. They visited the
Hoover Dam, then headed for Flagstaff
where they ran into a bad blizzard which
they drove through for thelast hourof their
trip into Flagstaff. .A trip to the Grand
''anyon over bad roads was rewarded with a
movie on the wide screen of a trip through
the Canyon by Helicopter and boat that was
so real it was thrilling, and sometimes
frightening. They looked down into an area
in the Canyon. where spring was already
arriving, with fresh green growth.
While travelling . on the flatlands of
Oklahoma they saw a great.many windmills
apparently generating power, and of course,
in Texas there were endless areas of oil
wells. Bob and EIVa returned by way of
Nashville and Cincinnati.
The Varna hockey team is in a five -game
playoff series with Bayfield Knighhawks.
They lost one, then defeated Bayfield in the
second game. Third and fourth games are
Tuesday and Friday, so maybe the Varna
people would like to cheer them on at
Friday's game.
A week ago Sunday,' Alec and Mary
Ostrom hosted a potluck dinner for about 20
members of Mary's family, then everyone
went for a sleigh ride to the toboggan hill,
courtesy of "Uncle Tom" Rathwell and his
beautiful team. After tobogganing, they
visited McAsh's sugar hush to see them
making syrup.

The Bayfield Lions News Letter has been
circulated again. It is well to note that the
collection of used eyeglasses is still in order
at bion Joe Brandon's hardware store.
Bingo will once more be sponsored
commencing the first week in May. The
committee in charge is headed by Allan
Hughes. •
(cord Graham who heads up the Easter
Seal campaign hopes that donations will be
mailed as soon as possible 'or given to any
members of the'('lub. So much can be done
to help the crippled child if funds are
available. A tour of the Crippled Children's
('entre in 'Toronto, would convince anyone of
the need for money to keep such programs
functioning.
