They had found out that what he fixed stayed fixed. John has been "back home" four times. Last year his friends warned him he was crazy to go with his diabetes and heart pro- blems and wheelchair. He went and sings the praises for the care received from air- craft personnel. For retirement, he had his main street repair shop converted into an apartment with adjoining garage - all floors on the same level. Although John is 'a neat housekeeper, he appreciates twice weekly visits by his Day Care Lady and check-ups by a nurse. There is nothing he likes better than to tate out his 1968 Pontiac for a drive in the country. "My daily visitors average six," he says. A neat pile of tools is kept in the living -room. If a friend needs one, he knows where to come," he explains. This winter he has been teaching two or three of them cribbage. Now, John is looking forward to the third visit of his brother Jim and wife from ' Belfast. They will arrive in April. Sunshine Sisters Banquet The Blyth Women's Institute held their Sunshine Sisters banquet in -the Blyth Memorial Hall on March 7. President Lenora Davidson conducted the business. The Sunshine Sisters exchanged gifts. Ruth Shaddick of Lond'esbord' showed pictures of Australia, New Zealand, also comrinented about various aspects of the trip. They were away for five weeks. He was born on March 14, 1902, at Ballyminstra, 12 miles from Belfast, Ireland. John Bailie came to Canada with his brother George in 1923, lured, like hundreds of others in the Old Country, by an am- bitious advertising compaign of the Cana- dian Government's Immigration Depart- ment. "I had a hard time at first," John said. "Then came the depression. When you buck the world, you've got to be tough. It isn't easy to be a stranger among strangers. In 1952, on construction work near Lon- don, John suffered an accident which necessitated the amputation of his right leg above the knee. He was fitted with a Pro- thesis. "To me," John explains, "it's just my wooden leg and I'm proud of its ac- complishments! Last year I had to discard it. You can blame it on my ailing left limb." County council gave approval to a $6.1 million road budget at its March 7 meeting. Over half will be spend on road con- struction, resurfacing and engineering studies. The largest single project proposed for this year is a $1.1 million road construction of 9.3 km on County Road 3 from Highway 4 to County Road 12. . A second road construction project, on County Road 22, is expected to cost $670,000. The project involves constructing 8.2 km of road from County Road 20 to Highway 86. Four roads are earmarked for resurfac- ing at a, total cost of $1.1 million. The roads are County Road 38, 34, 3 and 13. Other road department expenses total $2,8 million. This includes almost $800,000 for regular road maintenance. County engineer Bob Dempsey put $640,000 in the budget for winter control. Last year he budgeted $625,000 but only spent $610,000. The road department had a surplus of $683,000 last year which is being turned over to revenue in the 1985 budget. Mr. Dempsey said a special request of $300,000 for the road department last year was spent on the projects it was specified for. The county engineer's anticipated prbvin- 'Cial grant of $3.3 million was reduced by $20,000 by the ministry of transportation and communications, 01 course you want to keep more of the money you work hard for And you could—If you IPt H&H E?WLK prerure your tax return A•'.. rr llt,.,r 01 far 1 r0 a recent survey: 2 out ? ti i R tilos:" cu•,tomers who got refunds it:.l ' . u, tu',.a than if they n,, .,• v."
