The innovative program is designed to help the man who beats his wife. Dr. Doug Reberg and Laurie Thomson of the Huron Centre For Children and Youth have set up the program and will, conduct the sessions. .Ms. Thomson explains the pro- gram's concept as a "professionally assisted self help group that focuses on self disclosure and honesty.” Men are invited to take part in the 12 -week session program, with weekly two hour ses- sions. The program is based on open, infor- mal discussions that allows individuals to understand and control their violence. It will look at individual incidents that led the n,w'ni lexi., o ore 11 munity for support, but from all aspects of society where family violence may be suspected. He pointed out that there are no clear cut facts and figures on the number or incidents of family violence in Huron County. Evidence, from London, shows family violence as high as 15 per cent and Dr. Reberg noted, "Using these kinds of numbers, it gives us no reason to believe that Huron is an exception.” tie program requires six to 10 men to begin the group, and counsellors believe that it will only be a matter of weeks before the project will be underway. Sessions will run in 12 -week blocks, with new members joining the group on a conti- nuing basis. The total program will run 40 weeks. The open group format which has tamtltes and elsewhere. Attitudes are changing in regards to fami- ly violence and Ms. Thomson explained, "The male has the responsibility to control the choice of violent response." The hi -depth program will also look at the project's success in the home. A detailed evaluation is an important aspect of the pro- gram and Dr. Reberg noted that this will take six months to a year for full assess- ment. It will involve written evaluations and telephone contact with wives to ensure their safety. - The future of the Family Violence Preven- tion Project depends greatly on community support.
