women Today to celebrate ry men 's Day
CLINTON - Women Today members are
inviting the public to join them to celebrate
International -Women's Day on Friday,
March 8 by coming to an open house at their
office.
"International Women's Day is a time to
celebrate the work and accomplishments of
women, as well as joining together with
other women to voice our common concerns
for issues that affect us all" commented
Valerie Bolton, spokesperson for the group.
Women Today have been an active group
promoting the status and awareness of
women in Huron County. The group has
established a support and educational net-
work for women so they may affect social
change within the community toward a
more positive and equal treatment of
women. The group has been in existence for
five years arid has accomplished much for
a volunteer organization in that time.
Managed by a board of directors consisting
of eight county women, the organization is
non-profit and opens its membership to
anyone, woman or man, who supports its
goals.
Women Today has much to celebrate on
this International Women's Day. They are
presently completing a project entitled
"Growing Together" which has
substantially developed the leadership skills
of• their membership. Run mostly on
volunteer help, the group .has lobbied for
Tami Elizabeth Tranquada and Robert Paul
Galachiuk were married on October 6, 1984
in Divinty College McMaster University,
Hamilton. Tauri is the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs.l3ernard Tranquada of Jarvis and Paul -
is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Eli Galachiuk of
Clinton. The couple now live in Strathroy.

MRS. GRACE MARGARET HOWE of
Centralia and formerly of Downie Twp died
on Wednesday February 27, 1985. Funeral
service was held on Saturday March 2, 1985
MR. ALBERT fAB) EDWARD SHADDICK of
Clinton died on Friday March 1, 1985.
Funeral service was held on Sunday March
3, 1985.
MRS. ALICIA MARGARET LEYBURNE of
Clinton and formerly of Seaforth died on
Monday Match 4, 1985 Funeral service will
be held on Thursday March 7. 1985 at 2 p m
childcare, been active promoting an
awareness of violence against women, and
maintained an office with a well used
resource library and file on women's con-
cerns.
"Every day we get calls requesting infor
mation or referrals relating to. services or
issues• concerning rural women" said
Bolton. "We also have volunteers regularly
meeting and working at the Clinton office."
"But most of our work takes place out in the
community - at meetings in members'
homes, at workshops or by being active on'
community projects and research ac-
tivities."

Women Today is also celebrating a move
to a new office. For the past year they have
been in the basement at 52 Huron Street.
They are now moving up to the third floor to
a larger and more comfortable room!
Those coming to the open house will be
welcomed by Women Today members, be
offered • refreshments and information
material about the group -and other county
services.:
Of interest to many wil be their display
"Working Women" which was prepared last
year for a career fair held by Conestoga Col-
lege. The display is composed of three
panels. The first is entitled "The Facts" and
gives eight , factual - statements about
women's participation in the paid labour
force, i.e. "52 percent of Canadian Women
are in the paid workforce".
The second panel entitled "Women's work
is Changing" displays photographs of Huron
County women in „ the workplace with
several quotes. For example, a picture of

Alex Stevenson, a Lucknow area lawyer is
quoted saying "Women's role in the Cana-
dian legal system continues to expand.
Forty-eight percent of the 1983 first year law
class at the University of Windsor is com-
posed of women!"
The third 'panel is entitled "Valuing our
Work" and encourages people to look at
work not only for what we are paid but also
"our contribution, participation and in-
teraction with our society". The statement
"Women's work has often been unpaid or
undervalued" is surrounded by children's
drawings of undervalued work - for example
"Driving people places and delivering
things" and "Washing the dishes".
• Two questions are asked in the display.
"How is your work changing?" and "What
,.work do you do that is under -paid or under-
valued?" Viewers of the display 'are en-
couraged to participate in the display by
answering the questions on slips of paper
providedand taping them onto the display.
. Women Today is also celebrating being
almost ready to begin another major project
"Women Being Well". The project funded
by the Health Promotion Directorate of
Health and Welfare Canada will train
women and support them in -establishing
self-help groups.
"This project will truly enable us to be a
self-help network" said Bolton. "As we
establish' many smaller groups around
specific issues such as `making changes' or
`entering the paid workforce'."
Men and women are invited to attend the
open house from 2 - 8 p.m. on Friday; March
8, 52 Huron Street, Clinton on the third floor!

Peace through prayer
CLINTON - March 1, was the Celebration
of World Day of Prayer for 1985. The
program this year was prepared by the
Women of India and the theme chosen was
Peace Through Prayer and Action.
The morning service at Huronview was
conducted by two members from the local
Presbyterian congregation and was well
attended. Wayne Lester, accompanied by
the organist Frank Bissett, sang a solo.
The 2 p.m. service was held in St.
Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Clinton,
with several members from other
congregations taking part and it was also
well attended.
The organist for this service was Joanne
Walker, Clinton. Mrs. Gilbert Kidd,
Goderich, the First Baptist Church
minister's wife, was the speaker. The theme
of Peace was very well presented.
Following the service, tea and cookies
were served in the church hall.
Infant Baptism
On March 3, at St. Andrew's Presbyterian
Church, Clinton, Daniel Peter, son of Donald
and Debbie Wright was received into the
fellowship of the church through the
Sacrament of Baptism.
Bountiful supper served
CLINTON - Twenty-nine UCW members
and five guests sat down to a bountiful pot-
luck supper on February 25 in the parlour at
Ontario Street United Church. Penny -
collection losers provided the food.
Lois Elliott led the worship on the theme
"What is a good friend?" Olive Johnson did
the study on "How can we respond to
Korea's struggle for human rights?"
With Nancy Turner at the piano, George
'and Bonnie Turner sang two duets. Ronnie
then played a piano solo.
The card party was planned for Monday,
March 11 at 8 p.m. Everyone is welcome.
The Blyth Festival Singers concert will be
in Ont. Street Church on March 24 now in-
stead of March 3.
The Thankoffering Service is on April 28
in Ontario Street Church. Westminster
Weekend is May 24 to May 26 if members
are interested in going. Next meeting will be
March 25.
Former police officer dies
Albert Shaddick
Albert Edward (Ab) Shaddick, of 138
Victoria Street, Clinton died at the Clinton
Public Hospital on March 1, 1985. He was 78.
He was born to Thomas. Shaddick and
Annie Shaddick-nee Bromley in October 26
1906.
Mr. Shaddick was a retired police officer
of 'the Clinton Police force and had worked
for , Hullett Township while living in
Londesboro.
In 1943) he and his wife Beatrice Anne
Fairservice moved to the Victoria Street
house and Mr. Shaddick worked at Canada
Packers until he joined the police force in
1953. He worked for the department until his
retirement in 1970.
The Londesboro native also served as a
Clinton town councillor.

She and two children, Marylin I Mrs. Carl
Ward) of Stratford and Gerald of Woodstock
survive.
A sister, Elva, ( Mrs. Harold Scruton) of
Port Dover also survives, as do five
grandchildren. Mr. Shaddick was
predeceased by brothers William, Ernest
and Charles.
Mr. Shaddick was a member of Wesley -
Willis United Church where he was a life
member of the official board of the church.
He was also a member of the Loyal Orange
Lodge No. 710, and the Independent Order of.
Oddfellows No. 83.
Funeral services were held..March 3 the
Ball and Falconer Funeral Home with Rev.
James Bechtel of Wesley -Willis United
Church presiding.

be FRIDAY, MARCH 29, 1985.
This optional program will be offered of St. Michael's School, Stratford, and St. Mary's
School, Goderich, effective September 3, 1985, for pupils entering Kindergarten,

In order to register for Kindergarten, children must be five (5) years of age on or
