(Shelley McPhee photo) By Sheron Stadelmann Peace through prayer was the theme of the World Day of Prayer, held at St. Michael's Church in Blyth on March 1. The service was led by Nellie Van Bakel and assistants Wilma Rameloo, Nora Kelly and Judy VanBeers. Also assisting were Susan Howson, Melda McElroy, Lenore Davidson, Sheron Stadelmann, Evelena Webster and Mrs. Ken Bauman from the Blyth United Church. From the Christian Reformed Church were Mrs. Gelwicks and Mrs. Siertsema, and Florence Quinn and Janice Henry from Trinity Anglican Church. Guest speaker Rev. Roger Gelwicks spoke on peace. At the close of the service everyone took part in lighting a candle of peace. Sponsored by the Huron County Public Library, with the assistance of the Outreach Ontario program of the Ministry of Citizen- ship and Culture and Ontario Library Ser- vice - Saugeen, Mickie McClear will appear at the Blyth Branch Library on Tuesday, March 12, 1985 at 10:30 a.m. Hubbards gains bye BLYTH - In Blyth Industrial Hockey League playoffs both Hubbards and Bain - tons won their quarter -final series two games to one. Hubbards now gain a bye to the finals, while Baintons meet Blyth.Inn. in the semi-finals beginning March 7 at 9 p.m. Hubbards registered a 6-1 win to eliminate Radfords from further playoff action. Terry Rutledge led Hubbards with two goals and singles went to Bob Szusz, Brian Bromley, Dana Bean and Denis Knox. Ken Ritchie scored the lone Radfords goal. ' In the other series, Baintons knocked off first place Mannings with a 7-5 victory. Bill McDougall and Barney Stewart each scored twice for Baintons along with Dave Hull, Jeff Lockridge and Kevin Carter. The service was led by Dave Lee and hot chocolate was served to keep everyone extra warm. Guest speakers at United Church Bruce Lobb was the guest speaker at Blyth United Church on Feb. 24 when the session held charge of the service. Harvey Snell led the service and Bodie Craig sang the solo. On March 3 the morning service was led by the Blyth UCW. Susan Howson led the service and Evelena Webster led in prayer. Melda McElroy gave the scripture lesson. - The senior choir sang under the direction of Mrs. Donald Kai. Rev. Roger Gelwicks was the guest speaker. Lost Heir Four tables of cards were in play when the weekly Lost Heir match was held onFeb. 27. Winners included: high lady, Marg McCullough; low lady, Ferrte McDowell; high man, Charlie Smith; low than, Joe Holmes. Public speaking winners Junior public speaking competition was held at Blyth Public School on Feb. 27. Winners in the Grade 1 division were Julia\ McNichol, Karen Bromley and Tong. Richmond. Grade 2 winners were Jody Medd, Christopher Howson, Kim Ferguson, Kimberly Richmond and Andrew Wharton. Grades 3 winners included Sarah Rouw, Jerrod Button and Jennifer Stadelmann. Judges were Evelyn Merrill, Katherine Kaszas and Joan Leibold. Well deserved win for Blyth BLYTH - The Blyth Pee Wees travelled to Lucan on March 2 to take on their rivals in hockey action. When the final whistle blew, Blyth had a hard fought, well deserved 3-1 victory. Troy Chambers opened the scoring in the first period with the assist going to defenceman Daryl Elliott. Lucan came back in the second period to tie the .game, but Blyth regained their lead seconds later when Jeff Nesbitt carried the puck from centre ice to score from close in unassisted. Strong goaltending by Mike Cronyn and good defensive work by Mike MilLiam and Scott Cronin kept Lucan off the scoresheet during the remainder of the game. It was Shane Taylor who closed out the scoring late in the third on a backhander from 10 feet out on a powerplay with Jeff Nesbitt and Mike Preszcator assisting. Blyth's regular season record is now 10.2-2 with both losses at the hands of Lucan early in the season. The Ontario March of Dimes' 1985 fund- raising campaign is officially over. May Ann Howson is delighted to report that a total of $1052.07 was collected. in Blyth and area. The donations received from the com- munity will help enrich the lives of physical- ly disabled adults in so many ways - by pro- viding employment and job training oppor- tunities; camping holidays; wheelchairs, electronic units and other aids; improving transportation services and housing. . "We certainly can continue to help the thousands of physically disabled adults. across the province, thanks to the support received from Blyth," Mrs. Howson noted. Mrs. Howson would also like to add a special thank you to the members of the media for their support. And, a very special "thank you" to everyone who gave a dona- tion. Hubbards defeated Radfords during Blyth industrial League playoffs on March 3 in quarter final action, two games to one.
