From the stands

A different winter sport
•
Baseball is thought,of as a summer sport.
Sure it's a lot easier to play in -short sleeves,
shoes and. on grass, but if you ever . get a
chance to play it in the snow, don't pass. it
up. After two games you'll find out whether
you need to take a crash physi al fitness
course to get you into shape, or wether you
should stay in your favorite armchair.
Last weekend I ventured to Goderich to
join some friends in a sno-pitch tournament.
I never thought of myself as being in great
shape, but at the same time I never con-
sidered myself to be beyond repair.
However, at the end of two games I was
seriously wondering whether I would be
able to play in ,my broomball game later
that evening.
Because it was a cold day, I put a few ex-
tra pairs of socks on under my hiking boots,
a t -shirt, sweat shirt, vest, ski jacket, gloves
and a hat.
After my first turn at bat I decided the
jacket and the hat had to go. I couldn't move
my arms in the jacket and the hat was just a
nuisance. •
We were playing two-pitoh, which meant a
playeron your own team pitched to you, so
hitting the ball was no problem. One thing I
found amusing was when the ball was hit, it
simply stayed there. No tricky bounces, no
rolling, just a thud in the snow.
Anyhow, it wasn't hitting the ball that
tested your physical ability, it was running,
and diving.
-All the added clothing was bad enough,
but the choppy snow was something else.
The only thing I can think of to compare it to
is running in mud; slippery and hard to keep
your feet In motion.
I could handle one base at a time, and
since I'm not a strong batter, it wasn't too
bad getting to first base. But make sure
you're not in the line-up ahead of a good hit-
ter, that could do you in for the rest of the
day.
Another word of advice, don't go halfway
to the next base when a fly ball's hit because
it isn't fun diving for the bag and getting
snow down your clothing. But 1 sure is exer-
cise!

the second period as. both goalies' came up
with good saves when called upon.

7:09 as he stole a loose puck at centre and
outskated the lone Petrolia defenseman to
score an unassisted goal. With 2:34 showing

scoring on an end to end solo rush to make
the final score 3-0.

their schedule by dumping Seaforth 6-1.
Clinton finished the ''season with a 15 wins

against Seaforth when they lost 3-2.
Clinton wasted little time in this contest as
they opened up a 3-0 lead in the first period.

Kennedy with a beautifully executed two an
one rush pass to give Clinton a 1-0 lead.
Danny Wildfong increased Clinton's lead to
2-0 as his wristshot clearly beat the goalie at
5:16. Scott Rathwell assisted on the
Wildfong goal. Before the first period ended,
Scott Jewitt stickhandled his way' through
two Seaforth defenders to deke out the
goalie and give Clinton a 3-0 bulge.
The second period was scoreless as
Clinton missed several scoring chances to
pad their lead.
At 4:20 of the third period . Shaun
Chipchase scored an unassisted goal, but
Seaforth got that one back two minutes later
with Paul Dolmage scoring to spoil Derek
Hoggarth's and Robbie Marriage's shutout.
Clinton's high -flying little centreman Mark
Livermore scored his 19th goal of the season
at 8:42 as Scott Jewitt and Danny Wildfong
combined to assist on Livermore's goal.
With just five seconds left in the game'
Scott Jewitt scored his second goal of the
game as he was set up in the slot area from a
pass from behind the net from Mark
Livermore. Chris Kennedy also assisted on
the play.
