Sure it's a lot easier to play in -short sleeves, shoes and. on grass, but if you ever . get a chance to play it in the snow, don't pass. it up. After two games you'll find out whether you need to take a crash physi al fitness course to get you into shape, or wether you should stay in your favorite armchair. Last weekend I ventured to Goderich to join some friends in a sno-pitch tournament. I never thought of myself as being in great shape, but at the same time I never con- sidered myself to be beyond repair. However, at the end of two games I was seriously wondering whether I would be able to play in ,my broomball game later that evening. Because it was a cold day, I put a few ex- tra pairs of socks on under my hiking boots, a t -shirt, sweat shirt, vest, ski jacket, gloves and a hat. After my first turn at bat I decided the jacket and the hat had to go. I couldn't move my arms in the jacket and the hat was just a nuisance. • We were playing two-pitoh, which meant a playeron your own team pitched to you, so hitting the ball was no problem. One thing I found amusing was when the ball was hit, it simply stayed there. No tricky bounces, no rolling, just a thud in the snow. Anyhow, it wasn't hitting the ball that tested your physical ability, it was running, and diving. -All the added clothing was bad enough, but the choppy snow was something else. The only thing I can think of to compare it to is running in mud; slippery and hard to keep your feet In motion. I could handle one base at a time, and since I'm not a strong batter, it wasn't too bad getting to first base. But make sure you're not in the line-up ahead of a good hit- ter, that could do you in for the rest of the day. Another word of advice, don't go halfway to the next base when a fly ball's hit because it isn't fun diving for the bag and getting snow down your clothing. But 1 sure is exer- cise! + + + Minor Hockey Days get underway at the Clinton Arena on Friday, February 15 with Novice action at 6 p.m. They will be followed by the PeeWees at 7:15 p.m. and the Ban- tams at 8:30 p.m. On Saturday, the four to five-year-old Mites take to the ice at 1 p'.m.
