A plaque officially commemorating the renovation of the Clinton Town Hall Library
Complex was presented to Clinton Mayor Chester Archibald (left) last week, by Dennis

birthday, will be displayed in the town hall foyer. (Shelley McPhee photo)
CLINTON - After more than two years of
development and progress, the speech
pathology service offered at Clinton Public
Hospital (CPH) is back at square one.
The hospital is searching for a new
specialist to replace Jennifer Biskup who
left the CPH in November. Mrs. Biskup,
Clinton's first speech pathologist, chose to
advance her career at Parkwood Hospital in
London. Her replacement in Clinton has yet
to be hired.
"We're, quite concerned with the lack of
graduates in speech pathology," hospital
administrator Dan Steyn said.
CPH has beennlooking for a new speech
pathologist since 'October 1984. One
specialist from Ireland was interviewed and
she had the choice between nine differnt
job offers.
In the Windsor area alone, five positions
are available for speech pathologists. Cur-
rently in Huron County, one speech
pathologist, works out of the Wingham
Hospital.
Clinton and Goderich hospitals share the
services of one speech pathologist, but the
programs have suffered serious set backs
with the loss of the specialist. u
In Clinton between April and October, 1984
the speech pathologist dealt with 435 out-
patients and 22 in-hospital patients.
Before a full-time position was created, a
visiting speech pathologist saw an average
of 20 out-patients a month and two in-
patients in weekly visits.
Mr. Steyn says that the speech pathology
program has proved its worth particularly
in therapy for school aged children and
recovering stroke victims.
The CPH speech pathology program is
currently at a standstill. Patents are not
receiving therapy and their progress could
be set back. For children, parents are still
able to continue home therapy programs
and exercises, but Mr. Steyn pointed out,
"without professional help, progress can be
hard to measure."
He said that the present state of the pro-
gram is "a hardship on patients. We hope to
eliminate this in the future so that each
hospital in Boron county could have its own
service."
Mr. Steyn is optimistic that within the
next few months a new speech pathologist
will be hired. .
"We are very confident that we will obtain
a speech pathologist in May or April when
the next class graduates."
The hospital has contacted every universi-
ty in Canada. Michigan and Ohio, where
speech pathology is taught. The position has
been advertised nationally and at Cana;.•
Manpower.
"We're offering one of the higher salaries
in the area and we don't think that it's
dollars and cents that's creating the gap, it'
the availability of people," Mr. Steyn said.
The hospital is satisfied with the program,
that Mrs. Biskup developed. Mr. Steyn said
that the hospital understood her decision to
move to Parkwood Hospital where she could
specialize in her career interests.
Accommodations for the first speech
pathology program were established at the '
former nurse's residence, across the street
from the hospital. Better facilities are being
offered in a renovated area of the hospital
complex. .
Still, for now, the hospital twist play a
waiting game until a new speech pathologist
is hired.
