By James Friel
BRUCEFIELD - After working for 45 or 50
-3yearg, many people ease into retirement
and view it as a time to catch up on some of
their favorite pursuits such as reading,
,travelling and a special hobby.
Bill McAsh, the popular custodian at
Huron Centennial School has arranged to
have -some of his plans come into fruition on-
ly two weeks after his last day at the school
ijn.lan. 31.
:.. At that time Bill and his wife Eleanor mill
be making their way to Florida for a winter.
vacation, sort of a warm-up vacation for the
Streit planned this summer to Scotland where
Bill will be researching his ancestors.
"I could go on," said Bill with obvious
satisfaction, "but I better not."
Bill worked at Huron Centennial for 12
.years, which for four years overlapped with
working at -the general store he owned in
Varna. The store had been in the McAsh
family for about 75 years, but with an eye to
retirement and due to the varied interests of
his four children, he sold the store about
eight years ago.
His job as custodian has changed very lit-
tle in the last few years and even school per-
sonnel changes have been minimal.
"There have been very few personnel
changes. In fact, this year has seen biggest
since I came here."
He has worked for 11 years with Arnold
Keys, the other member of the custodial
staff.
There were three people working as cu'sto-
dians before the union came in and the work
' became judged on a square footage basis.
Bill has many other plans for retirement.
He became interested in caning chairs
411 about a year agowhen he started work on a
pair of longtime family pieces. Bill took a
course at Fanshawe College and now he
works on chairs for friends, and neighbors.
He also collects stamps and hag hp'n
researching the family name, with plans to
write a book after collecting the informa-
tion, and which held an interesting twist for
him.
The work which had to be done in Canada
,has basically been completed and as a result
led to the trip to his forebearer's land.
Others in the family had made the trip to
Scotlandand had even found the town from
which the McAsh's originated. However, a
glance through files failed to reveal the
McAsh name. Just recently Bill learned that
at some time his people had dropped the `K'
from McKash. His trip may confirm this.
Another of Bill's projects is to complete a
picture story of Varna conceived at about
the same time his brother Floyd had plann-
ed to write a history of Varna. Floyd has
since decided to discontinue the project but
Bill's interest in photography, still going
strong after its start when he was 15 years
old, has kept him committed to the book.
He hopes that when the story has been
completed it will be placed on display in the
museum for others to enjoy and learn from.
All this and hobby farming, too. Bill and
his wife live on 40 acres on the Bayfield
River not far from Varna in Goderich
Township. Presently, there is a reforesta-
tion project being conducted on the land and
in the spring there is maple sap to be col-
lected and turned into natural syrup.
,. 'It from Huron
Centennial School, the students presented
their friend with a series of skits and songs
during an assembly to honor the Varna
man. And to cap it all off, the student's coun-
cil presented a Norman Rockwell collector's
plate to him.
Bill is able to enjoy the best of both
worlds. He can look forward to finally work-
ing on his own projects in the future, but he
can also look fondly back on the events of his
working past and the friends gathered dur-
ing that time.

Bill McAsh hasretired from his position as custodian of Huron Centennial School after 12

career in which he owned the Varna General Store and worked at the Brucefield school,
but he's looking forward to it. (James Friel photo)
