Page 14—CLINTON NEWS,RECORD, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 1985 Sports From the stands 13y hire Horejk© No to Dome What will become of the CNE stadium when the Dome is built? Some say that the stadium will be able to hold its own, after all the Exhibition Place fairgrounds were around for 98 years before the Blue Jays came to town in 1977. But one fact remains, Exhibition Place will lose all revenues from professional sports. All of the "grand old dame" supporters agree that they will have to turn her into a facility that offers the best in entertainment and recreation. The board of governors were told last •:Yccii•to "come up with all the wildest ideas they can." The "wild" ideas range from a lakeside marineland to turning the Place into shades of Monte Carlo or a Grand Prix racing course. Other ideas include standardbred racing 'and dog racing, a mini -trade' centre, a merger with Ontario Place, a veldorome for cycling races; a modern agri-centre, more concerts and a curling and skating rink. The latter idea was suggested because the World Curling Championships will be held there in March of next year, therefore, the ice will be in and could be used for more than the ane event. The Monte Carlo idea consists of setting up veer round casino, one night a week, with a $1 betting ceiling and all proceeds going to charity, Sounds like a' pretty good idea, however, Toronto Mayor Art Eggleton is against gambling. Metro Chairman Dennis Flynn sees the mayor's reasons, but feels a casino could be a good idea "with very strict rules" reports the Toronto Star. I find it difficult to understand why a dome stadium needs to be built in the first place. The chilling winds, the cold rain, the hot sun and the odd snowflake makes a sporting event unpredictable as some teams play better under certain weather conditions. After spectators have sat through a rainy baseball game or a snowy football game, they know that they have braved the elements to watch their favorite sport. And how many times have you heard someone say, "boy, was it ever cold" after taking in a game?" I don't think they're complaining, they're just proud of the fact that they were there. The Dome is unnecessary. There is already a constructed stadium that suits the purpose, so why build another and leave the old one empty? If a Dome is completed I hope that some type of activity is found so that Exhibition Place is not abandoned.
