Sport:
From the stands
The beginning of the•year, brings with it a
fresh start. And if you are like most people,
it is a time to think about what lies ahead in
1985.
Some people believe in makthg New
Year's resolutions, but not me. The word
resolution doesn't have enough impact for
Me. Instead, I prefer to say I set goals, so
when the "Official Goal Setter" came
across my desk, I immediately skimmed
over it.
The goal setter is a book that explains how
to set practical fitness goals for yourself. To
me that is one of the most important aspects
of the book; setting a goal that you know you
can achieve without having to half kill
yourself. But at the same time, the goals
shouldn't be made so easy that one doesn't
have to trey.
Sometimes I can't be bothered getting out
of bed in the morning let alone driving up to
Goderich for a broomball practice on
Sunday morning, running on the ice for an
hour, driving back and then making lunch.
However, knowing that I'm expected to be
at practice gives me that extra push to go.
That's what the goal setter tries to do. It
makes you think by having places to write
your reasons for getting fit, your progress
By Anne Marejko
0. and other pertinent information.
Goals are the source of motivation, the
reason you want to.get fit.
Before a person starts exercising they
sho d determine five things; weekly
freqncy, activity days, the activity, the
amount and when.
-Weekly frequency is simply the number of
times you plan to do an activity in a week. A
minimum of three'times is the general plan
for fitness. At the same time, it is not
necessary to work out every day of the
week.
-Activities days make the weekly plan more
specific. This is when you plan out the actual
days to workout.
-For each activity day chosen, set a specific
exercise to do.
-The amount will vary. The same activity
doesn't need to be done the same number of
times every activity day. Variety is the
spice of life.
-When, forces you to set an exact time as to
when you are going to carry out the above.
This is where your real commitment to
fitness comes in.
So instead of •just half heartily getting into
fitness, take a few minutes, sit down and
really think about it.
Clinton Atoms split
two with Lucknow
In Lucknow the Clinton Atoms downed the
home town team by a 5-2 score.
Scott Jewitt got Clinton rolling in the first
period as he look a neat pass from Jason
Carter at the blue line, skated in alone on the
goalie to, beat him with a good shot to the
bottom right hand corner. Fourteen seconds
later Shawn Chipchase made it 2-0, as Scott
Jewitt's pass out from behind the net found
Chipchase alone in front of the Lucknow
goal for the score. Lucknow came back two
minutes later to narrow the score at 2:1 at
the end of the first period with. Justin Min' -
ray scoring the locals' goal.
• In the second period with 34 seconds gone -
Jason Carter sent a pass to Darrell Layis in
the slot and Levis made no mistake as his
wrist shot cleanly beat the Lucknow goalie.
At 4:26 Scott Rathwell made it 4-1 as Mark
Livermore and Scott Wright combined to set
up Rathwell's tenth goal of the season.
Lucknow's Justin Murray scored his second
goal of the game 28 seconds later to close the
gap to 4-2. But at 6:30 Jeff Riley, who played
an extremely good two-way game, once
again gave Clinton a three goal advantage.
Linemates Mark King and 'Gerri Campbell
also drew assists on the Riley goal. The
third period was scoreless as both teams
missed good scoring opportunities.
Back in Clinton, Lucknow scoreda narrow
5-4 victory over Clinton. Before the- game
was even a minute old, Clinton had jumped
off to a 10 lead on goals by Jason .fatter
assisted by Shaun Chipchase at the eight se-
cond mark and an unassisted goal by hard-
working defenceman, Scott Wright at the 40
second mark. Before the first period had
ended Lucknow had tied the game at 2-2 on
two goals by Chris Steveman.
In the second period Lucknow outscored
Clinton three goals to two as they took a se-
cond period lead of 5-4. Justin Murray and
Ray Dalton gave Lucknow a 4-2, but Shaun •
Chipchase with an assist from Jason Carter
and a goal by Mark Livermore with the
assist by Chris Kennedy tied the score at 4-4
The winning goal was scored by Lucknow's
Chris Stevenson as he gained his hat trick
goal. The third period was scoreless -as Clin-
ton tried hard to tie the score.• Shaun Chip -
chase had the best chance as he missed a
Penalty shot. Clinton was awarded the
penalty shot when a Lucknow player inten-
tionally threw his stick.
The Atoms' next game was Dec. 27 when
they -played in the Exeter Tournament.
Hockey action got underway in Clinton on December 27 in the fourth annual Clinton
Junior C Tournament. Norwich defeated Fergus 6-1 in the opening round. Six teams
played in the four day tournament and prize money of $1,500 and the Labatts Award were
up for the winners. Full details of the tournament will be published in next week's News-
Record. (Shelley McPhee photo)

WANT TO APPEAL
YOUR ASSESSMENT?
You still have time to appeal your 1984 assessment if you feel
your home or business property has been improperly assessed.
Your assessment is important because the amount of property
tax you pay depends on it, in that the assessed value, of your
property is multiplied by your municipal and school mill rate to
determine your 1985 property taxes.
Notices ofAssement have been mailed to property owners and
tenants whose assessments have changed since last year. Open
houses have been held in your area toeanswer questions and
amend assessment information if necessary. Open house dates
and locations were announced in a previous advertisement.
The Assessment Roll has now been delivered to your municipal-
ity for the purposes of calculating the amount of taxes you must
pay on your property in 1985. For information on your assess-
ment, -the Assessment Roll is now available for review at your
Municipal Office during regular business hours. If you feel your
property has been improperly assessed, and you have not yet
made your`appeal known, you stiI have until January 8, 1985 to,
deliver or mail an appeal to the Assessment Review Board. And
remember, even if you did not receive a Notice of Assessment,
you still have the right to appeal.
Appeal deadline -January 8, 1985
The Assessment Review Board is an impartial body reporting to
the Attorney General of Ontario, which provides you with an
additional opportunity to have your assessment reviewed if, in
your opinion, it is not fair and equitable with similar- properties in
your area. The Review Board is more informal and relaxed than a
regular court of law. You may present your own case, retain a
lawyer or ask a relative or friend to speak as your agent. •
To help you in filing your appeal, 'Notice of Appeal forms are
available from the Assessment Review Board, your Regional
Assessment Office or your Municipal Office. As well, you can use
the reverse side of a Notice of Assessment or write a letter stating
the property address and roll number, together with your reasons
for appealing. Appeals should be forwarded to the Regional Reg-
istrar of the Assessment Review Board listed below.
