Mr.. Croome offers the following advice
for placing Christmas calls:
A bit of planning before the holidays' will
help calls go through smoothly. Callers can
save time by getting the telephone numbers
they need in advance.
Directory Assistance operal.ors at "1",
plus the area code if required, plus 555-1212,
can provide out-of-town telephone numbers
for all of North America. For overseas
directory assistance, callers need only dial
"0" and ask the operator to get the number.
It's also a good idea to check the front
pages of the phone book ahead of time for
discount rates and the times when they app-
ly-
So, if you plan your calls and keep in
mind the time differences, you should have
an easy time getting through to say 'Merry
Christmas' and 'Happy New Year'," says
Mr. Croome.
CLINTON - Christmas Day is the busiest
day of the year for long distance calling.
This year, Bell Canada expects close to one
million long distance calls will be placed
from telephones in Ontario going to other
locations in the province, across Canada
and around the world.
Nation-wide, the total number of long
distance calls could reach six million in-
cluding operator -assisted and direct -dialed
calls.
Most calls will be dialed direct by
customers since that's the cheapest and
fastest way to call long distance.
In Clinton on Christmas Eve, Bell expects
about 150 operator -assisted calls in addition
to thousands more direct -dialed calls.
Christmas Day should see about a 75 per
cent increase in operator -assisted calls,
than on a regular business day.
()n ehrictrnac F.vP Roll osrnootc innn
distance calling to increase after 5 p.m. and
continue through the night.
From early morning through to 7 a.m. on
Christmas Day, there'll be a busy period
because of a large number of overseas calls
into different time zones.
"We expect calling to pick up again
around 10 a.m. and continue through
Christmas Day and evening," says Peter
Croome Bell's local manager.
New Year's Eve is busier than New
Year's Day, so Bell expects the heaviest
calling period will be from midnight, New
Year's Eve, until about 3 a.m.
Mr. Croome advises callers they may
have a better chance of getting their calls
through by placing them in non -peak hours.
Some circuits may be overloaded (a busy
signal or no dial tone) as busy times because
of the heavy demand on particular 'tries.
Callers should try again later.
Stanley Township winds down activities
STANLEY TWP. - After more than a
year's excitement and involvement while
guilding their municipal complex from idea
to spectacular reality, Stanley township
councillors are back to dealing with the
routine, unspectacular yet very necessary
matters that concern their township.
"We are wound right down. There's
nothing new since the new building", Clerk
Mel Graham 'commented after the
.December meeting of Stanley council.
During a discussion of the various options
regarding the future of the Huron County
Pioneer Museum, councillors were
unanimous in questioning the wisdom of
spending a large sum of money renovating
the present building. They would rather see
a new building, located in the more accessi-
, ble industrial park in Goderich.
