For last minute shoppers
Last chance for Christmas Shoppers! If
you still haven't found a gift for your
favourite outdoor person, don't despair.
Anything outdoorsy will do.
Hunters and fishermen are a strange
breed. I've never met one yet that has all the
equipment they peed, and even if they do
have an item, chances are they'd like
another, or can't find the one they own. I
know some friends that have 10 or 12 knives,
yet every time they open a gift, they're
secretly hoping it's going to be another one,
maybe just a bit different.
There are two items ycan never go
wrong with however.
For -fishermen, it's lures. Terminal tackle
lends itself to attrition, as those hooks are
always catching up on hidden logs or tree
branches. Supplying a partner with a few
during a session when the fish are really
biting usually means that's the last you'll
see of them. And, there are all sorts of
mysterious ways they just seem to disap-
pear
The best thing about lures is that they fit
everyone's budget (just keep buying until
y our money's gone), and they're available
at must hardware stores so you don't have to
search or hunt around for them. If you're
shy a small gift or two, just slip up town and
'have a quick look.
For hunters, ammunition is just the
ticket. No one ever seems to have enough
and it's a gift that is certain to be used. If
you're unsure of what kind, size, etc. just
call one of his or her hunting buddies, and
the} '11 fill you in. Again, most hardware
stores carry ammunition so it's not hard to
find and can round out your shopping list in
a hurry.

A new lightweight bolt action centerfire
Mini -Carbine with 20 -inch barrel has been
added to the Winchester Model 70 family.
This new economically priced carbine, in a
short action 243 Winchester caliber, is
tailored for smaller men and women and
younger hunters and makes a fine winter ri-
fle when heavy clothing is worn. It offers a
39" overall length, 12'/z" length of pull, and
nominal weight off only 53/4 pounds. The.
dimensions of the stock have been scaled-
down for a comfortable fit.
The Mini -Carbine offers traditional Model
70 accuracy, strength, and dependability as
well as all of the same Model 70 convenience
and styling features. A precision -slotted
anti -bolt design is incorporated for reliable,
smooth operation under the toughest condi-
tions. Thermoplastic bedding of the receiver
in the stock assures consistent accuracy.
Other features include the exclusive Win-
chester three -position safety, rifle' type
sights, contoured rubber recoil pad,
chromium molybdenum barrel, stainless
steel magazine follower, hinged floor plate,
sling swivels, and jewelled bolt finish. The
receiver is drilled and tapped. for scope
mounting.
The special slim one-piece stock is ge-
nuine American walnut with satin finish and
precise, deep -cut checkering in traditional
custom patterns, 16 lines per inch. The stock
has a classic, straight comb design and con-
toured pistol grip. Exterior metal surfaces
are polished and blued.
The short action results in improved
caliber match for the 243 Winchester car-
tridge that pays off in high performance and
better feeding. The new Mtrdel 70
lightweight Mini -Carbine is ideal for the
heavy brush or timber country we find in
Ontario. •
