HomeMy WebLinkAboutClinton News-Record, 1984-12-19, Page 11Churches hold joint service in Walton By Betty McCall WALTON - UCW members and friends of the Walton I Unit attended a Christmas meeting and feasted on turkey dinner, prepared by Phyllis Mitchell and her team, the losers in the copper contest. Marie McGavin, leader of the winning side, assisted. Christmas carols were sung and Doreen Hackwell gave the piano accompaniment. Margery Huether led the devotions, using a Christmas theme. Viola Kirkby and Melva Fraser gave readings. Rev. Swan contributed a solo and Marion Godkin played several selections on her horn. Marie McGavin told many of the Christmas legends and symbols. Viola Kirby presided for the business session and Audrey Hackwell took the roll call. Offering was received by Doreen Hackwell. The financial report from the general meeting was given by Leona McDonald. The annual meeting is set for January 23. The new programs for the coming year were given out to members with the same slate of officers in charge. Duff's United Rev. Charles Swan conducted the third Advent Sunday worship service at Duff's United Church. The presentation of white gifts for the Huron County Christmas Bureau were given by the Sunday School children. Greeters were Allan and Alice Searle. Bruce Hoegy and Graeme Craig received the offering. Flowers in the church were placed in memory of the late Mrs. Earl Watson. Community service Local area churches gathered at Duff's United Church on December 16 for a combined Christmas service. r The huge choir was formed by the local churches with organist Mrs. Wilbee and pianist and choir leader, Mrs. Kai. Those taking part were: Rev. Charles Swan, Walton United Church; Rev. Dave Snihur, Londesboro United Church; Rev. Dave Theissan, Huron Chapel Missionary Church, Auburn; Rev. Robin Lyons, St. John's Anglican Church, Brussels, Trinity Anglican, Blyth and St. Mark's in Auburn; Rev. Roger Gelwicks, Blyth Christian Reformed Church_ People report Institute members are reminded of the change of place for their Christmas pot luck supper, at the home of Margaret Shortreed Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. with a gift exchange. Mr. and Mrs. Ross Driscoll and Mr. and Mrs. Percy Dalton visited Tuesday evening at the home of Ruth Thamer. In the Christmas Sunday School concert report, it should have egad that Gloria Wilbee accompanied with her guitar for the children to sing Christmas choruses, not Gloria Love. Sorry for the mistake. Jason Shortreed, son of Bill and Valerie Shortreed, was a patient for ,p few days this past week at Children's War Memorial Hospital in London. Please call in your holiday news as soon as possible. News from Londesboro ® from page 10 Explorers A new member, Angela Horhanuik, was introduced when Explorers met on Dec. 14. Pam Hoggart and Melanie Knox opened the meeting and a collection was taken. For crafts they. made reindeer ornaments, then exchanged gifts. Leaders Yvonne Hoggart and Bev Riley gave everyone a bag of treats. by Denise Gross Burns UCW The Burns UCW meeting was held on Dec. 12 at the home of Trudy Pollard. A turkey dinner was served by Hazel Reid and her group. There were 17 members and three visitorspr ent. Follow dinner, Hazel opened the meeting reading a recipe for Christmas. Carols were sung and there were readings riStMds by Joan Hogarth and Beryl Reid. Rev. Dave Snihur told a story of how the German and American soldiers spent Christmas together in World War II. Mrs. Rice conducted business. Ar- rangements were made for boxes for shut- ins. An exchange of gifts for members took place. Ida Salverda gave a note of thanks to Trudy for having the meeting. WI cards There were six tables in play on Dec. 14. The winners were ladies' high, Agnes Rhoads, of Stratford, lone hands Verna Glazier, of Clinton, and low Elisabeth Lawson. In the men's division: lone hands, Glen Carter and low, Gordon Murray, of Walton. In charge were June Fothergill and Dora Shobbrook. Cards will be played next in four weeks on Jan. 11. He quickly gathered her children, Little Boy Blue, Little Miss Muffin and all the rest. This play, doneby the Grade 1 and 2 students at Clinton Public School, was part of their Christmas concert.
