A gift for Mrs. Santa Claus
By Helen (Owes
Outside Santa's workshop the elves and
fairies were gathered to wave him goodbye.
The sleigh was loaded and the reindeer paw-
ed the ground. With a final wave Santa pull-
ed on the reins, and with a jingle of.harness
bells, he was off! Greencap, the Senior elf,
sighed a big, deep sigh and turned to Fairy
Silver Wings:
"We only just made it," he said. "Santa
said there were more letters than ever this
year."
"Oh, I know," replied Silver Wings. "At
one point 1 began to think we wouldn't get
everything finished in time - all those Cab-
bage Patch dolls and their clothes - all the
stuffed toys - but we managed."
"What about a nice cup of tea?" asked
Greencap. Silver Wings nodded and they
went off together to the workshop cafeteria.
"Two teas and a plate of cookies, please,"
said Greencap, and then carried the tray to
a nearby table. They had scarcely taken
their first sip of tea when Mini Mike, the
smallest elf, came rushing across to them.
"Here you are!" he exclaimed. "I have
been looking for you everywhere. I was
helping Mrs. Santa put the' presents round
the tree up at her house, and ...." he paused.
"There isn't a present for her from the elves
and. fairies!" Silver Wings gasped and
Green Cap gave a long low -whistle.
"HoW could we forget?" he groaned.
"She is always so kind to us, especially
during the last weeks when we are so busy,"
said Silver .Wings. "Are you sure there is
something for Santa?" she asked Mini •Mike.
"Oh, yes," he replied, "the elves mad'°
him some beautiful new slippers. I saw
them being packed."
"Then," answered Silver ,Wings, "I will
get back to my workshop and the fairies will
dosomething as quickly as possible. I don't
know what, but something. If I need any
help Green Cap, I'll call on you," and off she
went like a flash of light.
When she reached the workroom the

fairies were busy tidying up, although there
was very little left - a few pieces of ribbon, a
little pile of stuffing and some scraps of
material.
"But what can we do?" chorused the
fairies when she told them what had happen-
ed. Some of them began to cry because they
all loved Mrs. Santa - and that gave Silver
Wings an idea, Hastily grabbing a howl she •
ran from fairy to, fairy, gently flicking the
tear drops from their faces.
••Silver Wings," sobbed Marigold, "what
are you doing? We can't give Mrs. Santa a
bowl of tears."
"Oh yes we can," answered Silver Wings
reaching for her fairy wand. She waved it
over the bowl and Marigold ran to look in-
side then gasped with surprise and delight.
The tears had been changed into beautiful
sparkling crystal beads.
"Oh," she breathed, "Look fairies - such
beautiful heads to make a necklace. We`
have some golden thread left - all we need is
a clasp. I will go to the jewellery elf - I'm
sure he will be able to make one for us."
"And go to the packing department," said
Silver Wings, "and find a box lined with •
velvet."
In no time at all the necklace was finished,
and Silver Wings called Green Cap and Mini
Mike to come and see it, sparkling against
the crimson velvet.
"It's beautiful," he said, ,"really
beautiful."
-"And much more than that," answered •
Silver Wings as she closed the box and tied
on the ribbons. "It is made from the tears of
the fairies, tears of love and concern."
On Christmas Day there was a party at
Santa's house for all the elves and fairies.
They all had presents and then it was time
for Mrs. Santa to open hers.
"What a beautiful gift." she said holding it
up in the lamplight. Santa fastened it around
her neck.
"I think,". he said, "it is the rnost wonder-
ful present you have ever received."
