Town escapes disaster
By Doris Hunter
Our little town escaped disaster early
Sunday morning through the efforts of local
firefighters, staff and owners of The Little
Inn.
Fire brolk'e' out at The Inn before 3 a.m. on
Dec 9 when Abby Champ, the hotel's
manager was awakened by the alarm
system. Firefighters tell us that Abby did all
the right things, by ensuring the safety of
the guests, locating the danger area and
alerting the fire department. Finding the
telephone system already burnt out, Abby
ran like mad through The New Ritz lawns to
the new home of Gayle and Pat Waters, The
Inn's owners.
Bayfield firefighters answered the call
and assistance was brought in from
Goderich and Clinton forces. An extremely
stubborn and elusive blaze' kept themen at
The Inn until 8 o'clock in the morning.

BAYFIELD - After asking Seaforth
solicitor Paul Ross to investigate an offer by
Harbour Lights Developments Ltd. to sell a
parcel of land east of Highway 21 to the
Village of Bayfield, council decided against
making the land purchase.
The parcel had originally been offered by
the company to the village with marina
development in mind. Tile letter sent to the
village indicated that Harbour Lights would
seek to develop the riverfront parcel into
more marina space if the village rejected
the offer. Accordingly, the price was set at
$225,000.
Following the review of the matter,
council decided against purchasing the land
for marina development and asked that a
revised price, based on the use of the land as
parkland, besubmitted.
"We feel enough marina space has been
developed," said Bayfield Clerk Pat
Graham.
The clerk said the review of the land file
had shown that the installation of a marina
would require rezoning. He said Harbour
Lights had previously made a bid in 1980 or
1981 to have the land rezoned but had
discontinued that bid.
The clerk said Harbour Lights
Developments has not yet replied to the
request for a revised price.

The Lioness meeting held on the first Mon-
day in December was the occasion of the an-
nual dinner when the ladies entertained
their friends and neighbours and set the
scene by providing a delicious Christmas
meal, a real party spirit as well as gifts
from the Christmas tree. It was a most en-
joyable evening for all concerned.
There were two special announcements - a
donation of $100 to the Vanastra Swimming
Pool, and the contest for the best decorated
home and business which was beingheld
again this year. And don't forget the Lioness
Christmas stocking now on display in the
bank of Commerce - tickets available from
members of Lioness - don't delay - get yours
now! All the village children are invited to
the Lioness Children's Christmas Party
which will take place on Saturday,
December 15 from 2 - 4 at the Community
Centre. Best Christmas wishes to the
village.
Clan Gregor Residents
Christmas Dinner
On Dec. 4 residents of Clan Gregor Apart-
ments enjoyed a Christmas meal together at
the Bayfield Village Inn. When everyone
was seated Mrs. Karen Pounder presented
ladies and gentlemen, with a delightful little
corsage which had been specially made by
the Brownies. Replete with good food, the
residents then returned and concluded the
social evening playing Bingo in the Common
Room.
Puppet Show
At The Library
Among the many events for children
( young and old) taking place in .Bayfield
over the Christmas period is a project of
members of the Baptist Church.
Transportation and Communication (MTC)
to discuss possible methods of marking the
Highway 21 corner in the village to reduce
the risk of accident.
Clerk Pat Graham cautioned that the
meeting was "just an exploratory meeting"
and said council could not guarantee that
anything would be done about the corner.
Suggestions were made to re-sign the
corner by the United Church to indicate to a
driver that pedestrians could be around the
corner.
The danger of the corner was again
brought to the attention of council recently
by a senior citizen complaining he ham
almost been hit by a car while trying ;to
cross Highway 21.

Best wishes, parties and delicious soup

The Sunday School of Trinity Church held
its annual Christmas concert and party on
Sunday after church service. Every child
hada. part to play, and the audience of ad-
miring church members, visiting fathers
and grandparents was loud in their ap-
plause.
The children had been very well trained
by their teachers, who produced a play and
carol singing as well as individual greetings
from the performers.
Santa Claus appeared, despite his snowy
beard looking amazingly like every child's
Uncle Eric. Usually you can depend on a
stick of gum from thisjolly elf, but this time
he had presents for everyone. •
The film shown was an animated version
of Oscar Wilde's exquisite fairy, tale the
Selfish Giant. One hopes the parents will not
forget to•read this lovely story to the
children, it has a message for us all.
Everyone is welcome at the Candlelight
Service of St. Andrew's United Church. It
starts at 7:30 p.m. and there will be choral
numbers,' as well as congregational carol
singing with the pastor, the Rev. Paul Mur-
ray to welcome one and all.

Fresh turkeys will be available the Friday
before Christmas, but it would be wise to
„order at least by the 19th.
Turkey and stuffing, lots of sweets arid
lots of company call for a few standby
dishes. I have never frozen it, but see ho
reason why the favorite soup at our house,
could not be stashed in the freezer. This is
the way to make it.
Three tablespoons butter, 1/4 cup sliced
onion's, 1/4 cup diced celery,1 lb. fresh broc-
coli or 1 pkg. frozen, the chopped stems are
just fine, 11/2 cups homogenized milk, % cup
table cream, 1 teaspoon salt, 1/4 tsp. pepper
and 1/4 tsp. curry powder. This is the inggre-
dient that makes the difference and chic en
stock. I just use the powdered broth diluted
with hot water.
Melt the butter, add onions and celery and
cook covered for five minutes on low heat.
Add broccoli and cook till tender. Add re-
maining ingredients, simmer for 10 minutes
but do not boil. Process in a .blender and
heat to serve.
It is always a hit at our house. Should
serve five or six but better double the
recipe. Merry Christmas!
