EPWORTHLEAGUE CONVENTION The Annual Convention of the Ep- worth League • of the Methodist Church, of Exeter District, met in the Lucan Methodist Church, on Tuesday, October loth, 1902. The President, Mr. W. H. Harvey, presided in his efficient manner. After opening services, led by the Rev. S. Anderson, of Kirkton, the Rey. W. R. Cooper, of Elimville, gave an address on "The preparation of the Prayer Meeting Topic," which was dis- cussed in a very able manner im- mediately after. Miss B. Hartnell, of Exeter, then read a most excellent and carefully prepared paper, on "The Cultivation of the Devotional Spirit in our Meet- ings." The paper was discussed in a very spirited manner, and` created a great deal of interest. The President then named as a nominating com- mittee the following: Revs. Dr. Han- non, of Exeter ; W. Rigsby, Parkhill ; Miss Mills, Granton' ; Miss Murdock, Heiman; Rey. S. A. Anderson, Kirk - ton, and the President. Reports were then given by the various Leagues' of the District, which showed the -work to be on the whole in a very, prosperous condition. The Treasurer's report showed a balance of $13.89 on hand. The Secretary's re- port, which was only a partial one, in that several Leagues were not report- ed, gives a membership of 683 in Senior Leaguers and 225 Juniors. The morning session closed with the bene- diction by the Rev. J. E. Holmes. AFTERNOON' SESSION The Pastor of the Lucan Church conductedthe opening exercises. Rev, W. Rigsby thenspoke very in- structively on the subject of "Loyalty to the State," followed by a paper on, "Loyalty to the Church," by Miss Lil- lie galls, of 'Exeter.. This was an es- ceptionally comprehensive paper and contained no useless matter. Rev. F. 1, Malott then gave all ad- dress on"Loyalty to the doctrines of our Church,," This was It very in- teresting one indeed. These address- es and papers evoked a considerable discussion. The Rev. S. A, Anderson, of Kirk - ton, then spoke on the subject of "The Forward . Movement for Missions," The address was a,, very enthusiastic oue, and brought a discussion which showed that the wave of Missionary sentiment was at a very high pitch throughout Exeter District, LIVENING SESSION The evening, session opened with a brief song seryice by the efficient choir of the Church, under the capable leadership of Mr. Geo. A, Stanley. . . special feature of the song service n especially worthy of mention was a solo, "One Sweetly Solemn Thought," rendered by Mrs. Dr. Orme in her own inimitable style., After the song service the President- elect,"the Rev. F. E. Malott, B. D., of Mensal!, was introduced by the retir- ing President. The President-elect made a short and suitable address. Dr. Mannon, of Exeter, was then in- troduced and gave an address onTern- perance. This address was a calm statement of the benefit of total ab- stinence and a strong appeal to the young people to hold themselves free from flee seductive influence of alco- holic drinks and to remain life-long total abstainers. The Rev, Thomas Manning, B. A, of St. Marys, then spoke onthe sub- ject.of "Missions." His address was a most enthusiastic one, and was a mas- terly presentation of the value of Mis- sions naturally as well as spiritually. Votes of thanks to the people of Lucau for their kindness and hospi- tality and to the retiring President were passed. After singiug a couple of verses of a suitable hymn, the Rev. Thos. Manning closed with the bene- diction one of the most successful Epworth` League Oonyentions' ever Exeter in District. "Land piaster" (gypsum) is about the best material available for dust- ing stable, as it tends to keep down any objectionable•:smells and fixes the ammonia„ if the manure should tend to heat. In any case, there is a con- stant tendency for ammonia to escape, and gypsum largely arrests this waste. THE KRUGER DIAMOND. From South Africa comes what pur- ports to be a history of the great dia- mond which President Kruger took with him to Europe, and which he has probably disposed of, though in what way is still a mystery. It. ap pears that the stone originally belong- ed to Meshesh, a Basuto chief, who was compelled to surrender it to Teh- aka, the Zulu King. Tehak's brother wanted it, killed the King to get it, and held it in possession until be came to grief at the hands of another Zulu chief, who dot it, and was soon.. after assassinated. by some one else who also wanted it. The details are not especially interesting, for the reason that the successive owners of the stone were short-lived chiefs of one grade or another, whose names are much more easily written than i pronounce'., and whose only place in. history is that derived from more or less intimate association with this fatal gem. Native authorities say that not less than sixteen successive possessors were either killed or driven out of the country because of it. The stone was then seen for the first time by a white man. who greatly desired it, A party of whites was organized to attack the village where it was known to be, and a fierce fight' en- sued, in which. 300,- mostly natives, were killed. Memela. a chief who had it, was wounded and concealed it in his wound, where it escaped discovery Memela was subsequently caught by the Boers and set to work in slavery. President Kruger heard his story, se- cured his liberation, and in gratitude for this favor, Memela gave him the stone, which has brought him much more trouble than satisfaction. And now .Eruger bas been overtaken by the fate shared by all previous pos- sessors, who were not killed—he was deposed from power and forced to leave the country. Where the diamond now is in un- certain. It is generally believed that Mr. Kruger has parted with it. Some say it is in the coffers of the Vitican; others that it has been purchased by the Emperor of Austria, and is now in Vienna. It is said to be of 200 carats weight, but is not perfect.
