Call, a gift for life
When Jesus was born, a wiseman
presented a gift of gold to honor the special
birth.
Throughout history gold has held special
meaning and value. While people have
always adorned themselves with jewelry,
crafted from nature - bone, teeth, wood,
stones and metal, the most desired of adorn-
ments has been gold.
Until the time of the French Revolution,
all jewelry was amuletic, having special
meaning for the wearer as well as the power
to bring good fortune and ward off evil.
Today, the tradition of amuletic jewelry
continues as families pass valued pieces
from generation to generation. Symbolic or
religious jewelry is worn by people from a
wide range of cultures. It is frequently given
in theform of gold charms and pendants, on
special occasions like Christmas.
One of the most familiar of these is the
gold cross, a universal symbol from ancient
times. It has, come to represent heaven and
earth, the Tree of Life and the dualism of
man. For Christians around the world it is
symbol of religious faith.
Gold medallions bearing religious pic-
tures of inscriptions are also worm as sym-
bols of belief. Perhaps the most well known

Among the best selling non-fiction are :
The Game by Ken Dryden; Intrepid's Last
Case by William Stevenson; On %Lags Of
Eagles by Ken Follett; Motherhood, The Se-
cond Oldest Profession by Erma Bombeck.
Paperback books make ideal stocking
stuffers. As well they can be combined with
other items to make an unusual and per-
sonalized gift.
Relaxing and book reading go hand -in -
is the St. Christopher medal, believed by
people of many denominations to protect the
wearer while travelling.
Charms for good luck and hope are worn
by all cultures. Chinese and Hebrew sym-
bols in, gold are frequently worn on gold
chains around the neck. The anchor is
another symbol of hope and steadfastness.
Frequently seen in company with cross
and anchor, the heart, a universal symbol of
the physical and spiritual centre of being,
wisdom and charity, completes and trilogy
of faith, hope and charity.
Because religious jewelry tends to be
worn all the time, it is especially important
that extra care be given to protect it from
damage. Clean it regularly in mild
detergent and water and dip it in alcohol to
remove film or grease.
Have a qualified jeweller check clasps,
chains and charms regularly. Remember,
the gold itself is indestructible, but the fine=
ly crafted chain links and charms that are
made from it are not.
Golden traditions can be a special part of
any family's history. Past, present and
future can be linked with gifts of gold that
have special meaning and a history all their
own.
hand. With that in' mind, dress up your
paperback gift with a new chair, or lamp, a
pair of slippers and robe. For those who like
to read in the tub, why not include some bub-
ble bath and a big fluffy towel. A selection of
gourmet coffee or tea and a new mug can
make that paperback gift extra special.
The reader on your gift list will greatly ap-
preciate a new book, and some cozy ac-
cessories for those stormy winter nights
ahead.
