It was felt that Morgentaler is guilty of having "conspired to procure an abortion," the of- ficial charge against him'. The judge, as was pointed out at the meeting; had instructed the jurors to consider whether the law as such had been broken, He also pointed out that the law itself was not on trial. Further- more, according to' the judge, the usual justification for abortion, namely that it is "necessary", does'not apply in the Morgen- taler case. The members of Wingham Pro-life deplore the fact that Canada's anti -abortion laws, by which such clinics are prohibited, are so easily flaunted. Abortions may be performed at present, but only in accredited hospitals, and then only when a .committee of physicians. approves. Even so, it does not seem difficult to get an abortion in Canada, as Statistics Canada reports that there are at least 65,000 (registered) abortions per year in this country. . It is possible that the .present Canadian government may call a free vote in parlia- ment oh the abortion issue. Pro -Life members are encouraged to write to their member of parliament, or to the Minister of Health (Jake Epp) to propose that this be done soon. The Goderich and Distct Pro -Life group held its annual dinner mdfdting on Oct. 24, in. Clinton. The speaker, Arend Kersten, also expressed the hope that the government would soon move to pass tougher anti- abortion legislation, or at least hold a free vote in parliament on the subject. The presi- dent of the Goderich Pro -Life group remind- ed those attending the" dinner that "pro - choice" does not really mean what it seems to mean, as "... (the) intent in reality is to of- fer not just `choice', but the `choice to kill'." Wingham group's Education Chairman, Sally Campeau, summed up the problem with the optimistic remark that, in the end, "right will prevail." , PECK .
