Horticulturalists raise 11 11 75 at flea market sale By Bertha MacGregor HENSALL - The Hensall District Hor- ticultural Society met on Monday evening at Hensall Public School with a good atten- dance. President Cathy. Mann opened the meeting and Joyce Pepper played the piano. Rob Gackstetter sang two solos. Belva Fuss accompanied at the piano. Eileen Rannie thanked him and presented him with a gift. A profit of $75.85 was made at the Com- munity Flea Market. Donated plants from. the sale were used for prizes and Dan and Joyce McClinchey donated plants that were part of a draw. This past summer Bill Gibson completed a flower judging course and is now a credited floral judge. Cathy congratulated. Bill on being chosen. to receive the Bicenten- nial Award. .Eileen Rannie introduced guest speaker Thea Wisch and she demonstrated a Tradi- tional Christmas Centre, they use in Ger- many. Sheila Raeburn thanked the speaker and presented her with a gift. Old songs were played by, Dorothy Mickle. Velma Robinson conducted the draws. Cathy clos- ed the meeting with a poem. Refreshments were served. The society's annual meeting will be held Jan. 23 at Hensall United Church. Announcements The Hay Township Mystery Bingo was held on Nov. 29 at the Zurich Community Centre. The jackpotof $500 was won by Iva Reid, Hensall. • The Three Links Seniors will hold their an- nual Christmas dinner on. Tuesday, Dec. 11 at 6:30 p.m. The turkey and vegetables will be supplied and members are requested to supply desserts, etc. A goodprogram is be- ing arranged. The Hensall Cubs and Beavers went bowl- ly ing in Zurich Nov: 29 after school and en - Maurice Boyd D.D. of Metropolitan Church officiating. Interment was in Bayfield Cemetery. South Huron Youth For Christ South Huron Youth for Christ held the December. Rally Saturday night December 1 at the Brucefield schoolwith a very good attendance. The rally opened with several choruses and prayer by Director Don Westlake. Quizzing followed with 5 teams competing. They quizzed On Psalms 122 and 123, with the following results:. Zurich came in first; Bayfield and Exeter tied for second, 'Huron Park was fourth and Seaforth fifth. The announcement was made regarding the Winter Camp. at Devalan, New York in February: There are a good number plann-, ing on going and if anyone wishes to go, con- tact Ron Westlake, Bayfield. • The program was then turned over to a singing group from London called "Re- joice" and they put on the entire program accompanying themselves with guitar, piano, tambourine, bells, drums and other small instruments. This proved a real lively and spiritual program. January rally will be on January 5 at the school with a London group called Paradise Players. This group attended the Olympics at Los Angeles this past summer. This pro- gram will be dramatized: If you want a real night of Christian fellowship be sure to at- tend. Ron closed the rally with prayer. This was followedby a time of fellowship and the board members served refreshments of Christmas cookies, squares, with coffee and punch. Everyone enjoyed a real profitable evening. Be sure and attend in January and enjoy. Christian Fellowship for all the fami- joyed a good round of fun. They were escorted by leaders Marg Clarke, Joanne Willert, Kay Gardiner, Tammy Preszcator and several parents assisted. Hensall Bantams Hensall Bantams hosted Exeterin an ex- hibition game Nov. 28. Rob Wareing stopped all but two shots in the 9-2 win. The defense worked hard with Rob Taylor scoring two • goals and Shawn Vanstone assisting on two the congregation and Pauline Bell, Joanne Others. The other sharp shooters were Brian Moir,' Sherry Dayman and Starr Jesney Moir with a hat trick and two assists, Jim were the ushers. Dickins with two goals and three assists and Mr. McDonald spoke on the subject of United Church News Advent Communion was held in the United Church on Sunday morning. Evelyn Elder and Kay Mock assisted the minister in the Communion Service and Elders serving Communion were Bill Bailey, Loretta Riley, Dorothy Corbett, John Rowcliffe, Donald Stebbins, Hilda Payne, Dorothy Brintnell and Shiela Corbett. Sharon Wurm greeting Chris Campbell and John Rooseboom one goal each. The next game will be in Hen- sall Dec. 5 when Huron Park visits. Personals Mrs. Leonard Noakes spent a few days with her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John Noakes in London and attended the funeral of her friend Miss Irene Douglas on Friday. Native of Hensall Dies in London At Chesley Park Nursing Home on November 27, C. Irene Douglas died in her 92nd year. Miss Douglas taught school for many years and was a daughter of the late George and Margaret (Logan) Douglas who moved to Hensall from Blake. She was remembered by a large number of friends and family. Complete funeral service was conducted in the Chapel of the A. Millard George Funeral Home, 60 Ridout Street South on November 30 at 3 p.m. with Reverend R. "Sent With Good News" using the words from Luke 4, verses 16 to 21 when Jesus read from Isaiah Chapter 61 and closed by saying "Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing." As we prepare to greet and to meet Him in this Advent season He is still the bringer of Good News, the minister said. Jesus came to bring life bread that will never go stale, and to bring life that will never end. Douglas Klopp was organist for the ser- vice and the senior choir led in the ministry of music. Next Sunday will be the Annual White Gift and Pageant Service with 52 children presenting the Christmas story through word, music and actions. Thle community is also asked to receive and listen for the children from the Sunday School as they go out carolling next Sunday evening at 6:00 p.m. The church was beautifully decorated for Christmas by the Unit Two of the United Church Women. ACHIEVEMENT NIGHT - Angela Gower, Clinton II, ( centre front) received provincial honours for 12 completed projects at the 4-H Achievement night held in the Stanley Com- munity Centre. Receiving county honours were Lana Jones, Holmesville I, (back left), Debbie Carter, Clinton II, Beth Clements, Tiger Dunlop and (front) Sandy Merner, Clin- ton II and Lynn Moffatt, Kippen III. (Exeter Times -Advocate photo) Kippen student wins 4-Hawar A second -year mathematics co-operative student at the University of Waterloo was the recipient of the Murray Cardiff Citizen- ship trophy at the Huron County 4-H awards night. Held in Clinton on Nov. 30, Greg Hoggar- th, 20, of R.R. 2, Kippen,received the award culminating a year of work in 4-H agriculture clubs. The citizenship trophy, presented by MP Murray 'Cardiff, goes to the 4-H member deemed to be outstanding in 4-H club work in Huron as well as in home and community activities. Greg has been in 4-H for eight years, com- pleting 19 projects in calf, poultry, snowmobile, financial management, per- sonal finance, youth council and junior leader. He has held a number of 4-H ex- ecutive positions and has won several top member awards in 4-H. Greg has also been a leader of the Computer Club. As a co-operative student, Greg will be working in Ottawa for several months with the department of health and welfare. The C.S. McNaughton trophy for the Huron County 4-H member receiving the highest number of points was awarded to Donna Johnston of R.R. 2, Bluevale. A member of the Brussels 4-H Dairy Calf Club, Donna . recei -958 points out of a possible 1,000. Donna also received the Doug Kennedy award for top 4-H sheep club member and the Huron County Holstein club award for getting the highest number of points and having exhibited a Holstein calf. 'The warden's novice award, presented by Huron Warden Tom Cunningham was presented to David Jones. of R.R. 2, Clinton. The award goes to the novice 4-H member with the highest points, The J.A. Anstett award, presented to the top beef calf club member, was awarded to Paul Coultes of R.R. 5, Brussels. He also received the Stan Jackson award for being highest in the beef championship show at the Seaforth Junior Fair. Huron County Pork Producers' Associa- tion trophy was presented to Paul Dodds of R.R. 1, Seaforth for, achieving the highest number of points in a 4-H swine club this year. He also won the Neil McGavin award for 'having the highest score in the. 4-H plowmen's club. The Bank of Montreal award for the top first-year swine club member was won by Jeff Robinson of R.R. 4, Clinton. •Andrea Smith of R.R. 6, Goderich won the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce award for receiving the highest standing in 4-H dairy calf club work. Previous winners are ineligible. The John Franken memorial trophy was awarded to Marie DeBruyn of R.R. 1, Ex- eter who had the highest score in 4-H horse and pony clubs. The Farm Safety Association award to the 4-H farm safety club member with the highest- score, was presented to Brenda Hackett of R.R. 3, Lucknow. The Old Mill award to the top sheep club member was presented to Martha Boon of R.R. 2, Bluevale. William Fotheringham of R.R. 4, Seaforth won both the Vincent Farm Equipment trophy to the top tractor club member and the Huron County Soils and Crop Improve- ment Association award as top member in the field crop club. Elizabeth Stewart of R.R. 1, Dublin is another top winner. She received the Ara- bian Horse association' of Eastern Canada trophy for judging, the Cliff McNeil trophy for exhibiting the champion holstein calf at the Seaforth Fall Fair, the A.Y. McLean trophy for being the champion showman, the Huron County Holstein award as tops in the senior dairy management club. Robert Rader of Dashwood will receive both the Hully Gully trophy for exhibiting outstanding knowledge of snowmobiles and, the Pinerilge Chalet trophy as his scorer in the snowmobile club. Jeff McGavin of R.R. 4, Walton received two awards, one for having the champion 4- 1.1 gilt and the other for top swine showman. Queensway fetes volunteers at party On Nov. 26 several ladies from the Bethel Reformed Church came in to play Bingo. They also led us in a sing -song with Bill Gib- son at the piano. On Nov. 27 we held our church service. Our minister was unavailable so we listened to Scripture reading and sang Christmas Carols. Louise Mitchell had the honour of lighting our first Advent candle. On Nov. 29 we celebrated our members' birthday with a party. Our birthday people were Louis Paie and May Westlake. Mrs. Mary Roobol helped serve cake and ice- cream. Thursday evening we viewed a beautiful movie entitled "Living Wilderness". Friday, Nov. 30 in the afternoon we hosted a party for all volunteers who come to Queensway. Our Master of Ceremonies was Miss Beth Jantzi. The first item on the pro- gram was the "Story of the Three Pigs" starring Rev. Stan McDonald, as the wolf; Coby Amsing as Dinky; David Kyle as Boinky and Shirley Luther as Snout. Ann Boersma supplied the sound effects. Next on the program featured Lloyd McDougall whistling the tune "Nellie Gray". Coby Amoraal played guitar and sang several songs. She is quite talented and her music was enjoyed by all. Beth Jantzi thanked the volunteers and presented them with a carnation. The presentation was assisted by Nail..y Phillips, Sheila Corbett, Neil Regan, Jack Lowe, Mary Parlrner and Muriel Gunning. George Mathonia, Jim Young •and Ivan Morris set our toes tapping as they enter- tained with the Accordion, Violin and Banjo. ,A delicious lunch was served.
