Santa gets help
from postal. elves
More than 500 postal volunteers and
postmasters in southwestern Ontario will be
helping out a certain bewhiskered old
gentleman again this year by making sure
that anyone who writes to him will get a let-
ter from Santa.
All that's required on the part of the young
writers is a return address (very important)
and Santa's proper postal address: Santa
Claus, North Pole, Canada, HOH OHO.
Last year, more than 45,000 'letters from
Santa found their way to children in the
region, whether they lived' in large cities
like Windsor, London or Hamilton, in small
hamlets like Bornholm or Blytheswood, or
out in the countryside.
This year, with more than 400 post offices
involved in the program, it's hoped that
another five to ten thousand letters will be
sent on behalf of•the jolly old elf.
For their part, volunteers in post offices
large and smallare spreading the word
about this special seasonal service, and are
devoting a lot of time and effort in making
sure that no child is forgotten this
Christmas.

Christmas gifts from the heart
By Stephanie Levesque
Canadians are assaulted dally by media
images of people dying from starvation in
African countries.
Canadians consider themselves wealthy
compared to these starving.
In fact, as the Christmas season draws
near, the plight of some of our neighbors
here in Hpron County is drawn to our
attention.
While most Huronians will be enjoying a
festive Christmas dinner with turkey and all
the trimmings, there are the less fortunate
who are unable to enjoy such a repast.
However, the untiring efforts of some
citizens in Huron will ensure a traditional
Christmas for those in need.
This year, Suzi Symes of Goderich is
heading up what has become an annual
institution, the Christmas Bureau, one of the
volunteer programs of Family and
Children's Services of Huron County.
Peggy Rivers, co-ordinator of volunteer
services for Family and. Children's
Services, says the annual bureau is operated
for families with children under 16 who need
help at Christmas. She emphasizes that
those benefitting from the Christmas bureau
are not necessarily Family and Children's
Services clients. Families requiring
assistance are usually referred to the
bureau by other agencies or professionals. The salaries of management level

Management pay reviewed
A board'spokesman said the salaries were
based on salaries for similar positions in the
private sector and with other school boards.
The salaries now range from $19,000 to
$28,000 and by 1989 will range from $20,000 to
$35,000 in 1984 constant dollars.
The salary increases will be phased in
over the five years.
