Lauper . in
spotlight
By Janet Tench
This week is a quick look at one of the top
ladies and one of the top gentlemen of the
rock world: Cyndi Lauper with She's So
Unusual and John Waite with No Brakes.
Cyndi Lauper, the wacky red head who
has brought women's liberation on Friday
nights with her "Girls Just Want To Have
Fun", also presents a fun upbeat album.
While Lauper's success could be passed off
as a trend, she has a true singing ability that
makes her more than just fashion. In "When
You Were Mine," she hits a note that can
shatter a wine glass. As well, all her songs
are well-written; the mood of the lyrics is in-
fused with the music.
She's So Unusual is definitely an in-
novative album, ranging from the sound of
the '20s (He's So Unusual) to a distinct '80s
sound (She Bop). Definitely a great
Christmas present. Rating: 9.
John Waite, formerly lead singer with the
Babys, has found the proverbial spotlight
with No Brakes. However, unlike the above,
Waite's album will not be long remembered.
Certainly Waite's ballads are tender songs;
but they are sung with an intensely emo-
tional voice. To listen to songs of heartbreak
sung in that desperate strain for any length
of time is terribly depressing.
Other than Eurashima, John Waite has
had one big hit with "Missing You." But
note that the first line (everytime 1 think of
you) was also the lead into the Babys smash
hit of the same name. Oh well, Waite might
make a career out of acting with the Paper
Dolls crew. Rating: 6.
