MR, TARTE ON THE RXODITS.
Ron. J. Isreel Tarte deals a crushing
blow to the claims of the government,
that the exodus from Canada to the
United States has ceased, At the
Montreal Board of Trade banquet to
Premier Barton, Mr. Tarte stated
that enamigration was the curse of
Canada. At Duluth he found one-
tenth of the population of that city is
made up of Canadians from Ontario.

persons have made their homes in the
United States, instead as Mr. Tarte
puts it, "Of remaining here, where
they would have remained good
Canadians and good British Subjects,"
Thousands of young men continue
to join the ranks of our departed sons,
and isastern Canada is steadily feel-
ing the drain. The whole Northern
portion of New Brunswick is being
depopulated by the departure of its
people for points across the border.
There they seek employment in the
factories from which we brought $70,-

Canada appears to have been pretty
badly gold -bricked in the case of those
Doukhobor immigrants, who were
brought outlrom Russia by Mr. Sifton
at the expense of a large amount of
this country's good money; and the
acquisition of whom by Canada was
heralded as such a triumph of. the
statemanship of the young Napoleon

pears to be a community of half
lunatic cranks; and the latest mania
which they have developed is a refusal
on religious grounds,.to work or make
any provision for themselves for the
winter; with the consequent prospect
that the government will have to take

The following case has been brought
to the attention of the W. 0. T. U., of
New York. A woman of criminal ten-
dency died in 1827 and her descendants
to the number of 800 have been traced.
Seven hundred of these were criminals
thirty-seven of them being murderers
who were executed for their crimes.
The family has cost the nation $8,000,-

an illustration of the fact that paren-

EMERGENCY FUEL.
The peer miners of the anthracite
coal region who were led into the
strike, now in the sixteenth week, are
awakening to the fact that the great
community of householders are not
• dependent on ibis kind of coal. In an
emergency they can resort to soft coal
with every comfort in heatingwithout
changing the character of their ranges
and furnaces. And bituminous coal
will have to be resorted to to tide over
the corning winter, as, were the min-
ers to return to work now, they could
not supply the demand. Discussing
"soft coal as an emergency fuel," the
New York Times says the subject will
present no difficulty to the people of
that city. It says:—" The furnaces
and ranges designed for anthracite
will burn any grade of bituminuous
coal which reaches this roarket- If in-
tended for that fuel they would have
been made somewhat different as to
their draught openings, fire potlinings
and smoke exits, but the difference is
not so great that as an emergency fuel

necessary, the New York householder

heating. There are reasons, perhaps,
why the coal dealers have not made
this fact more generally known; but
fact it is, a,nd the preident householder

point useful,"
The Times declares thet soft coal in
rft n go or cook stove will meet all the
r«ptirereents of domestic use if ordin-
ary intelligence is displayed in the
management of the fire. The same is
true of hot, air furnaces. Probably
the greatest difficulty will be that ex-
verienced in changing the habits of
servants who have never known aby
fuel except anthracite. Filling the fire -
pot oe a range to the lids with soft
coal will not give good results, and at-
tempts to broil over fresh fuel will be
disappoiritink though for this purpose'

oven temperatures uniform. Soft coal
ignites very quickly, dies down with
equal facility, and needs constant
watching and frequent replenishing
to maintain even a ineasurebly. cnn-
stant fire. In these respects it more re-
sembles wood than anthracite, but it
burns very nearly as well in an an-
thracite utnge as in one built for a
market where only soft coal is used as
a domestic fuel.
In an anthracite -heating furnace
soft coal needs to be treated very dif-
ferently from anthracite, but the dif-
ference consists in the management of
draughts and checks. in the feed door
of every furnace there is a slide damp-
er to admit air over the fire When
anthracite is used this is opened only
if it is desired to deaden the fire and
lower the temperature of the house.
With soft coal it must be left open all
the time, The great volume of gases
evolved from it in the coking process,
which is the first stage in its combus-
tion, calls for more air than can be
had through the body of fuel, and un-
less this is supplied above the fire the
greatest value of the fuel is lost up
the chimney in unconsumed gases.
Too much air for good combustion can
be admitted over the fire, but this is
not likely to be the case if the slide
damper in the feed door of a furnace
built for anthracite is lef t wide open
all the time. The draught opening in
the ash pit door, on the other hand,
needs to be less widely and continu-
ously open than an anthracite. With
the same amount of bottom draught
which it is customary to give hard
coal, soft coal would simulate the com-
bustion in a blast furnace, and call
for constant stoking. The householder
must also remeinber that the check
draught in the smoke pipe, which with
anthracite is usually kept open in
moderate weather, cannot be opened
much if any, with soft coal, or the
house will fill with smoke. The best
way is to leave it closed altogether.
With attention to these details, which
reverse the customary practice with
anthracite, a furnaee may be run on
bituminous coal so as to keep a house
entirely comfortable.

A Sad Letter from a lady whose
Husband was Dissipated.
Hew She Cured Him with a Seeret
Remedy,
"Ihadfor years pe.tiently borne the disgra.ce,
suffering, misery and privations due to my
husband's drinking habits. Hearing of your
marvellous remedy for the cure of drunkenness,.
which I could give my husband secretly, I de-
cided to try iL I procured a package and
mixed it in his fold and coffee, and, as the
remedy was odorless and tasteless, he did not
know what it was that an quickly relieved his
craving for liquor. Ile soon began to pick up
flesh, his appetite foe seid food returned, he
stuck to his work rcgit'arly, and we now have a
happy home. After he was c aopletely cured I
told him what I hail di when he acknowl-
edged that it had beim his saving, as he had
not the resolution to break off of his own
accord. I heartily advise all women afflicted as
I was to give your remedy a trial."

A PATHETIC LETTER
‘' I had for a long time been thinking of trying the
Tasteless Samaria Prescription treatment on my
husband for his drinIcing habits, but I was afraid he
would discover that I was giving himmediclne, and
the thought unnerved one. 1 hesitated for nearly a
week, but one day when he came home very much
intoxicated and his week's salary nearly all spent,
threw off all fear and determined to make an effort
to save our home from the ruin I saw coming, at all
hazards I sent for your Tasteless Samaria Pre-
scription, and put it in his coffee as directed next
morning and watched and prayedfor the result.
At noon I gave him more and also et -upper. He
never suspected a thimand I Men hot,: kept right
on giving it regularly, as I 'aid discovered some-
thing that set every nerve in my body tingling with
hope and happiness, and I could see a bright future
spread out before me—a peaceful, happy home, a
share la the good things of life, an attentive, loving
husband, comforts and everything else dear to a
woman's heart; f. tny hu.band had told me that
whiskey was vile sod and he was taking a dislike
to it. It was only too true, for before I bad given
him the full course he had stopped drinking alto-
gether, but I kent giving him the medicine till it
was gone, and then sent for another lot, to have on
hand if he should relapse, as be l -d done from
promises before. He never bee cm 1 pm writing
you this letter to tell yrm w th nkful I am. I
honestly believe it will cure tlle worst cases."
HER FATHER

A Pluelty Young Lady takes on

of the Liquor Habit.
A portion of her letter reads as follows :—
" My father bad often promised mother to stop
drinking, and would do so for a time but then,
returned to it stronger than ever. One clay
after a terrile spree, he said to us : It's no
use. I can'tstop drinking.' Our hearts seemed
to turn to stone, and we decided to try the
Tasteless Samaria Prescription, which we had
read about in the papers. We gave him the -
remedy, entirely without his knowledge, in bis
tea, coffee, or food regularly, according to
directions, and he never knew he was taking it.
One package removed all his desire for liquor,
and he says it is now distasteful to him. His
health and appetite are also wonderfully im-
proved, and no one would lmow him for the
same man. It is wee fifteen months since we
gave it to him and we feel sure that the change
is for good. Plea.° send me one of your little
books, OSI waat to giveit to a friend."
