Thr week trio irelgiltOrneve bands are
• turit. Ranger^ wi' Midnight
Madness' (1• 'do trot believe this to be their
first LP) and Pal Young with No Parley
(Young being English, this could be a corn
pilation of British releases). These two
bands were extremely difficult to analyze
because little information on them was
available, but as with every artist group the
album always reveals character.
lvigPt Hanger is a popular band locally.
Their music pulsates, yet has lyrical quali-
ty. Take the song Sister Christianson; it
rates -as a love ballad at roller skating. (Not
to mention When You Close Your Eye plac-
ed number 31 on Billboard this week). While
• Midnight Madness was released in 1983, it is
one of those slow starters that is peaking
now.
Musically, Night Ranger likens well to
One heck of a class act

Children's Events - designed to bring you
the best in live entertainment at a fraction
of big city prices! The excitement begins/.
with a concert by Sylvia Tyson - "one heck
of a class act" as one reviewer inelegantly
put it.
The frequently -held perceptions of the
woman pop singer don't seem to apply to
Sylvia Tyson. She is not a brittle, affected,
"show biz" type; she is not an ethereal
"folkie"; she is not an "aw-shucks" country
hayseed; and she is certainly not the hard -
drinking, hard -living rock and roller, never
at honle on stage unless holding a bottle of
Jack Daniels. Her enormous strength is ap-
parent in almost everything she does. Her
commitment to her music, and her apparent
inborn ability 'to transcend fad and fashion
are the true hallmarks of her strength.
Sylvia Tyson, it seems, has always been
part of Canadian popular ° music. And it is

Now once of KW. Thi seems natural because
there is a "speoiat thus" to Poul Stanley
and Dune Silrirrious.
Uowever,. there is one trait that keeps this
album, from being first class normality.
Most of the song writing here is credited to
Jack Blades. He has the basic verse -chorus
verse -chorus pattern down pat, bi$ he
doesn't deviate from it. This /sakes the
songs dull. You don't find Slade doing that.
Naturally there are the nice touches, such"
as Freres Jacques preluding a Touch of
Madness, but everybody has something
Similar to that these days (Saga, Platinum
Blonde, Slade, Aldo Nova etc.)
In all, Night Ranger does everything
"right" - they evep include lyric sheets with
the album - which makes them okay, but
they'll need a special trait to take them to
the top. Rating: 7 out of 10.
It's a different story, though, with Paul
Young, who brought you the hit Come Back
and Stay. Young is much like Joe Jackson;
his style is laid back, pleasant to the ears
and experimental. His vocals, again like
Jackson, are stark, adding a fresh in-
nocence to the sound.
Still in line with the innocent sound are the
-lyrics. Generally they deal with broken love •
affairs. They are so rich with pain that they
pull a string in your heart. -
Like all good artists, Young uses a variety
Of instruments and sounds. In Wherever I
Lay My Hat there is tasteful use of the piano

The only traOk deserving eiitieisin is the i
title song, No Palrlez. Here the words fall out
of synch with the beat, YWotda.get drowned 1
out by other words. While you can be sure
this is intentional it doesii• t vibe with the •
rest of the LP. It sounds like somebody fell
asleep atthe soundboard..
Another asset for Paul Young is his
fashionable appearance. His hair (that's all
that counts these days, you know) is styled
in a way that will thrill young Duranies, But
be it his looks or his music that intrigues
give Paul Young a try. Rating: 9. • •
