Sate alnd easy to llaa,. propane is an excellent fuel for sizzling' .seal or broiling, burgers' vig thhe barbecue and cylinder are kept rn good cotiall. Odeot„ neac- cident m lKeno a recently,,.a leak in a fuel line nand a re, that r•esulted in property ge o 41,500 to a home. Liquid propane is stored in cylinders under pressure.; released into the air, it turn* intoa heavier-than-air vapor that set ties; in low areas where it isn't readily dispersed. The smallest spark or flame can set it off with enough explosive power to cause extensive property damage or per- sonal injury. Experts with the Ontario Ministry of Con- sumer and. Commercial Relation's Fuels Safety Branch, offer these four tips for the safe handling of propane barbecues: •Play it safe. Test your barbecue for leaks at the 'beginning of every season. It doesn't take long and it's easy to do. Never test for leaks with a flame. First, connect the cylinder to the barbecue, mak- ing sure the rubber seal is in. good condition. Remember that the connector is tightened in a counter clockwise direction -the opposite of most threaded connections. The regulator should be installed with the small vent hole facing down. Then, open the main supply valve and brush a soap and water solution over all lines and connections. If any bubbles appear, you have a leak and the valve must be closed immediately. Have the barbecue repaired before using it. •After testing for leaks, check the date stamped on the raised collar that protects the cylinder valve. This indicates the date of manufacture and if more than 1-0 years have passed since the most recent date, the cylinder is due for reinspection or replace- ment. Take the cylinder to a propane dealer with an employee certified to make inspections. The cost of $15 to $25 includes replacement of the pressure relief valve and the in- spection is good for another 10 years. In Ontario, it's illegal to fill cylinders that need inspection, have large dents or gouges or are badly corroded. •When it's time for a refill, drive directly home with the full cylinder instead of taking the time for other errands. If left inside a hot 'car for more than a few minutes; propane can expand in the cylinder and. may be released through the pressure relief valve. Cylinders should be transported inside the passenger compartment, secured in the upright position, with windows open.. If it must be carried in the trunk, the trunk lid should be left open to prevent heat buildup. •A final. note of caution: Never bring a cylinder indoors. Barbecues may be stored indoors during -the winter months, but the cylinder should be disconnected and left out- side, away from the home and garage. Even . a slow leak can release enough propane to cause a major explosion. Make sure children know they shouldn't play with the cylinder. A plastic or metal ,cylinder valve plug - available at many pro- pane dealers - will help prevent accidental release when the cylinder is not in use. Thames services move north . The Thames Valley Children's Centre recently announced the start. of .a pilot pro- ject to bring therapy services to physically handicapped children in Bruce County, the most northerly area served by the Centre. The outreach program will be at Kincardine General Hospital, where a therapist will be located one day a week throughout the sum- mer. - A group of eight .children who usually receive therapy at the Thames Valley Children's Centre in London will now be seen in their own community for continuing treatment on a regular basis. Physiotherapy will be provided initially, and other services such as speech and com- munication development, and 'occupational therapy will be available as need is iden- tified. Doctors in Bruce County have been notified of the outreach program in order to encourage continuing referrals to the ser- vice. This program is offered by the Thames Valley Children's Centre in recognition of the needs of patients living beyond easy driving distance from London. The Centre is the major rehabilitation facility for physically handicapped youth from birth to 18 years throughout southwestern Ontario. Counties served 'by the Centre include Bruce, Elgin, Essex, Grey, Kent, Lambton, Middlesex, Oxford, Perth and Huron. Children from all these areas travel to Lon- don for assessment and as much treatment as possible. ,Childreh will continue to be assessed by Centre specialists and the outreach pro- gram is hoped to improve service to this large geographical area. Bruce 'County needs will determine the frequency of the therapy services offered. throughout the fall and winter. The project will bo evaluated in the spring of 1985 and the results will determine if similar pro- grams will be started in other areas. The Thames Valley Children's Centre aeki'iowledges the reoperation of the Kincar- dine General Hospital who made the facilities available for this project. } ►tu1 thiy, August 2 l h,I 19.'8G 4, r t e If,.a n itl t irri*Mquirltet AN A&PPU RRENT RGULAR ` DMA.
