4-H News
The August meeting of the 4-H Youth
Council was held August 9 in Clinton. The
"north" half of the club was in charge of this'
meeting. A skit was presented to show the
proper and improper methods of having a 4-
H tour.
4-H demonstrations were also discussed
with Lisa Thompson asking all members for
one good point in a demonstration. The
members then completed a word puzzle to
find all of these words which Lisa had
deviously hidden.
The project for each member was discuss-
ed as well as preparing a booth for local
fairs. The meeting adjourned with the 41
pledge and lunch served by the south half
of the club. - •
4 -Hers to test skills,
on Reach for the Top
The first annual Huron County 4-H Reach
for the Top Competition will be held on
August 28 at the Clinton Arena at 8 p.m.
This night will be an interesting night
where .the wits of several 4-H members will
be tested on general questions. The ques-
tions have been selected from all the, 4-H
lessons from the various clubs held this year
in Huron along with general 4-11 knowledge.
This evening should prove to be quite en-
joyable and educational. At the present
there are six clubs entered and we are look-
ing for a maximum of eight. If you are in-
terested in taking part, please contact
Karen Rodman, at the Clinton OMAF Office
for more information.
Lisa Thompson,
4-H Youth Council.
London native
elected as 29th
IODE president
of Canada
Barbara MacEachern of Brechin, Ontario
was recently elected the 29th president of
the National Chapter of Canada, IODE, and
brings to this position a background of 39
years of IODE involvement.
Born in London, Ontario, she received her
early education thete and then attended
Havergal College in Toronto. She later
returned to London to attend the University
of Western Ontario. The MacEacherns have
a son Dick and daughter Leslie who are both
married and live in Ottawa. They also have
three granddaughters.
Currently a member of the Lady
Margaret Alexander Chapter of Orillia,
Barbara has belongedto five primary
chapters since initially joining the Peace
Hill Chapter in Wetaskiwin, Alberta in 1945.
As the wife of an officer in the Canadian
Armed Forces, Major N.D. MacEachern
( retired), she notes that membership in
IODE remained one of the constants during
their years of service life, a membership
only interrupted by a three-year
appointment in England. She found that
IODE brought a sense of belongings,
presenting an opportunity to make friends
and have a place in the community,
overcotning "that terribly new feeling" with
every transfer.
Barbara MacEachern's deep
commitment to IODE is confirmed in that
she has been honoured by Life Memberships
at each level of the organization. The Wing
Conunander Guy Gibson V.C. Primary
Chapter in Ottawa; the Municipal Chapter
of Ottawa; the provincial Chapter of Ontario
and the National Chapter of Canada,
Mrs. MacEachern says, "IODE is women
working together in their own communities
to fill needs there, but more than that, it is
the joining together under Provincial
chapters to serve needs in their provinces.
Finally and most important to me,,, at the
moment, is the fad that we are one of
Canada's great women's organizations,
giving service to Canada and an opportunity
for, personal growth to every member."
