which huger longer in such natural

of the venerable fortress as a vantage
ground for sightseers are almost un-
rivalled.
The only entrance is from the east

for a time used as a place of pale

taken, it le Bellamy who eve, 4,
great deal of the so-called patriotism
of today consists no so intich in a love
for one's own country as a hatred ot
all other countries." This he charact-
erizes as false patriotism, against the
"true," the sincere love for one's own
country. The Seotch are considered
to be among the most patriotic to be
found anywhere and we believe they
possess that trait in the truest sense
of the term. A noticeable feature of
our stay in this city has been the few
intoxicated people which we have en -
'46a countered, The national beauty of
the country and its historic associa-
tions are conducive to the highest
sentiments of patriotism.
The scenery which charms the eye
and. gladdens the heart of the traveller
as he speeds on his way or rests at
some halting place is frequently of
surpassing lovliness or unspeakable
grandeur. One is traversing regioes
which ate world-renowned in song and
legend. foe what country has given
birth to stoeies so thrilling and songs
and ballads staebarroing as that won-
derful English end Scottish Border-
land. A land glorious of itself yet
glorified all the more because the
great "Wizard of the North" illumin-
ated it with the fire of his genius. The
country abounds in scenes calculated
to promote romantic feelings and en-
gender sentiments of the most pro-
found patriotism. Every one nurtured
among its hills learns in his infancy of
tne deeds of his forefathers who have
fallen in defence of country or religion
and his heart is stirred with deep
veneration and love for the country of
his birth.
There is a great contrast between
this city and others we have visited.
sneepeqweep of man and nature are
here bien conjoined in producing an
-effect unequalled in the world. There
is no cultivated taste which cannot be
gratified by a visit to Ediuburgha'Here
the anticenary, the historian, the mor-
alist, the scientist, the painter, the
poet have have all reattifold attrac-
tions.
A few of the important sights and
buildings might be interesting. Trav-
elling by the NorthBritish,one arrives
in the city at Waverley station and
emerging from this you notice the
Sine new North British Station hotel,
andlhe Waverley market. Passing
into Princes street and looking west-
ward one sees what is admitted to be
one of the finest streets in the world.
On the south side are the Princes
Street Gaeders, lying probably 100 It,
1"below the street level, and. traversed
in the rear by the line of railway men-
tioned, but, which strange to saer, does
not mar their beauty in the least.
Other important buildings on this
street are the statue and the art galler-
ies, the former containing works by
the ancient Greek and Roman sculls-
- tors, and the latter works by Flemish,
French, Italian. German and British
artists, some of these beiug 600 yeses
old. At the eastern limit of the street
is situated the Calton Hill from whicu
one of the best, views of the city may
be obtained. Here are situated several
monuments and the Royal 0 t sir vatoi y.
Among the raost important buildings
must be mentioned the inuseuin of
Science and Art. Bele ale to be seen
vast collections in natural hist ory,
manufactures and indnstural art.
Among the places of interest from an
historical point, of view might he men-
tioned the old St. Giles Cathedral. It

Time will not permit us to give you
anything like a description of the
castle, but a few of the most intereet-
ing points may yet he noted. St. Mar-
garet's Chapel enjoys the distinction
of being the oldest building in Edin-
burgh. and as far as is known it is the
smallest Chapel. It dates from the
end of the llth century. There is a
window on the south side ef the apse
which represents Ste. Margaret
Two on the south side of the nave,
representing her husband Malcolm
Cannore, and her son David. One in
the west wall bears a cross and sacred
Monogram.
The bomb battery is situated in
front of this ehapel and the most in-
teresting piece of ordinance in this is
that called Mons Meg. It derives its
importance from its antiquity and
peculiar construction and the various
traditions with which it is associated.
It is supposed to have been made in
Flanders to the order of James let. It
was burst in 1682, having been over-
loaded when- firing a salute in honor
of the Duke of York. It was after-
wards removed to the Tower of Lon-
don, but through the influence of
Scott was returned in 1829.
The crown room strong mid vale ted,
its chimneys and windows secured by
iron bars, and the entrance by two
strong doors of oak and iron, fitted

is in the same room, from 1707 'till
1819, The Regalia proper consists of
three articles, the crown, the sceptre
and sword of state, with which was
found in the same chest a silver rod
ascertained to be the badge of the
Lord Treasurer, of Scotland. .The
fortn of the crown is remarkably ele-
gant. It weighs 56 ounces. The lower
part. consists of two circles'the under-
most much broader than that which
-rises over it, both are composed of
purest gold, the uppermost is sur-
mounted or relieved by a range of
"fleurs-de-lis" interchanged with cross-
es Retirees" and with losobs or pinnac-
les of gold, topped with large pearls.
The sceptre is a slender an tlegant
rod of silver about thirty-nine inches
in length the stock being of a hexagon
form, divided by three ornamented
rings and surrounded by an antique
capital of embossed leaves, supporting
three small figures representing the
Virgin Mary, St. Andrew and St,
James. The ornaniented niches in
which the small figures are
placed are surmounted by -Small crys-
tal globes, and yet again by small oval
fel ()bee topped with an °motel pearl.
The Sword of State was presented to
J intes IV by Pope Julius It. The
orkmanship is of a fancifnl and eli-
gent descriPtiou. It is about, 5 feet
long, of which the handle and patinel
occupy fifteen inches. They are form-
ed with silver, gilded, highly carved
and ornamented. The cross of the

No other medicine can so quickly

to fulfill their important duties. Mrs.
A."Saunders, Brencondale, Ont., says:
"I was a great sufferer from severe
attacks of neuralgia in the left ovary.
Ab times the attacks were so acute
that I thought I would. lose my reason.
Several doctors treated me and I was
a patient be the hospital. I obtained
no relief from medical treatment.
The doctors said unless I had the
