It is the •only three- -stprey cor-miinercial building on IN Main street, and.the.only.examkle of-Sepond and pith',• Styling. in a store bloc in the town, one of the few in the arra, Clinton was incorporated as a: town in 1875. Two years later James Twitchell and Thomas Jackson 'Sr. built the ;Victoria Block. Both men were merchants doing well in their respective businesses, and. when -each decided to expand they did so with one building. The block has always housed retail stores though the nature of these. has changed much through the years. In the left (north) storefront, Twitchell ran a. saddlery and harness -making shop, later expanding into shoes, boots, and luggage. Jackson con- ducted a tailoring and men's furnishing establishment in the south half. For most of this century the store once inhabited by Jackson has been a dry goods store • formerly Irwins, currently Mary's Sewing Centre. The other half of the building became part of Cooper's Department Store, then a 5e -to -$1 store, and finally the variety store now known as C&E. The second and third floors have seen a variety of uses over the years, including apartments and millinery shops. The Mechanics' Institute — the forerunner of to- day's public community library — occupied a room briefly in 1880, while struggling to get back on its feet after losing its quarters and most of its books in the November 1879 fire that destroyed the Market Buildi Lodge meetings were also held for me years in the Victoria Block, in the large pen rooms on the third floor. The strumse. is of white brick, and is flanked by two.. -storey blocks of simlr date, and constructio►, which• serve to set: off the •taller centre l tff}lding. ;.The Victoria.Block exhibits the.nnansard .roof so. typical of the Second Empire .style of . 'architecture. This style derives from the fashion of Second Empire France ander ruler Napoleons 11I from 1852..to 187.. Inset into the roof are four hooded dormers in the configuration known as "Vic- torian Segmental". A tower stands out from the roofline with its convex mansard roof contrasting with the inward curve of' the main roof. rA round window in its roof com- pletes the tower, The building, has a wide, overhanginghave With an elaborate cornice supported by decorative brackets. The cornice has a broken curved pediment at the centre; inset into, the curve of the pediment is the date • stone, "Erected 1877". The windows at second floor level are of sash type, with single panes, tall with carv- ed stone .lintels' which are joined at their bases. The sills are continuous, with the ex- ception of the centre windo:.' below the tower; this is a double window with a twin arched lintel. The main opening is a double door situated between the two storefronts, leading to the apartments above. Over the door is a large arched transom with decorative woodwork. In its 107-year.existence the Victoria has seen little alteration. It retains the ori:' al e roof, and the second and third floor . re basically unchanged. Both storefronts have been changed somewhat — most notably the display windows — but this is a natural. result when modernization is looked upon as progress. • Libertarians seek seat Four candidates, are seeking the Huron - Bruce federal member of parliament seat in the Sept. 4 election.
