For the second time this year, the Clintn
Police Department office was broken into
and one of their .38 cal.'revolvers was stolen.
The break-in occurred early Sunday
morning and thieves gained entry by
smashing the wooden door frame of the
office. They pried open three police lockers,'
but only took Chief Lloyd Westlake's
revolver.
High winds last Sunday night and Monday
pushed large waves into the Lake Huron
shoreline and gobbled up hundreds of feet of
shoreline. In front of Dr. Frank Newland's
cottage, five miles north of Bayfield, about
15 feet of shoreline disappeared under the
waves, leaving Newland's cottage only 20
feet from the water.

A party of young people from London
guests of. Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Rorke apd
family at their summer cottage, Lake
Huron, had quite a thrilling experience on.
Sunday afternoon. Three of the party; Reid
Evans, W. Brown and Miss Edith Essex,
went out in John Cuninghame's sail boat for
a short sail.
A stiff northwester' had the lake surface
pretty well roughened up and in putting
about too short the boat was capsized and
the occupants thrown out into a deep water.
All three were swimmers and were possibly
not in real danger of drowning but they
clung t the overturned boat and made
ineffective efforts to right their craft. Their
plight was witnessed by two young men,
Keith Saunders of Goderich and a friend
visiting at their cottage quite near, who,
• launching Kenneith Rorke's motor boat,
hauled up the beach being equipped at the "
time with one paddle, the motor being
attached. With considerable difficulty,
owing to the heavy sea running; they
reached the submerged boat and taking the
• lady in managed to tow the boat with the
men swimming alongside to shallow water.
All were chilled by' their long stay in the
water and by the cold wind. -Rolled in
blankets in the sun made comfortable and
were none the worse for their sudden and
prolonged dip.

Work for all -On Tuesday of this week a
large number of Indians passed through
town to pull flax in the neighboring farms,
owing to the fact that hands are scarce in
this vicinity. There is still room for 'more
and the company is offering $6.00 an acre for
hands to pull the flax this is an opportunity
for school boys and others to make their
summer's wages; small half acres can be
set apart for the• boys. Mr. Ross at the
Graham House thelocal representative, will
be pleased to have the names of any who
desire to .work and will see that they are
placed in fields convenient to town.
All the Russian railway stations keep
complaint books, where passengers may
enter complaints. Some days it might
astonish the Manager if the complaints were
entered.

Quit Humbugging -The street watering
cart was used on Friay to swill out the drain
across Victoria Street near the Post office.
It is time the authorities quit humbugging
about this drain. It has been a source of
trouble and annoyance for years and is only
getting worse instead of better, the nuisance
extending down Mary Street: The
authorities know perfectly well the cause of
all the trouble and sooner they remove it the
sooner will the evil be remedied. The matter
has been shirked by every council we have
had for years, and it is time the matter was
promptly dealt with, either by the council or
Board of Health.
Waterspouts -Visitors to Bayfield on
Tuesday evening were treated to a beautiful
and very unusual sight on the lake, being the
appearance of two immense water spouts,
at a supposed distance of about ten miles
from shore. The clouds were funnel -shaped
of a dark lead color, the blue sky in front and
the bright yellow tint behind, caused by the
setting sir forming a combination of colors
that we., wonderfully beautiful. The
waterspouts were rapidly moving landward,
but got smaller by degrees, until they were
entirely absorbed by the clouds. Quite a
number of people witnessed the unusual
sight.
