'rlfi`/G Ilyth's main street beings pride to village By Melda McElroy Biyth's main street, Queen Street, con- tinues to take on a new look. The town parking lot is now almost a place of beauty, flanked by the Bank's well groomed park, and bordered on Queen Street by three Umbrella Catalpa trees, wooden planters designed by Councillor William Manning, constructed by Gary Courtney, and filled with flowering plants selected and planted by Horticultural Socie- ty members. New green benches have been placed at this spot. Here, people enjoy sitting to read their mail. The Post Office is just across the street. Nearby is friendly -looking Memorial Hall Park which contains more benches. These are not only a boon to townspeople but to theatre goers as well. This park contains the drinking fountain, a new brick planter, and a patio floor, no less, made from salmon colored interlock- ing bricks. These are also used to make, expansive walkway which extends past the former bank building to the main corner. The former bank, has a new front, thanks to the Baintons. Each of four windows shows a mannern,in flisnlaving the latest in leather, suede and wool fall fashions from the Old Mill. Filter Queen "IN THE HEART OF DOWNTOWN VARNA" 482-7103 Its other front windows display the sign, "Chauncey's Hair Styling", another new look. Below these windows, in a nook, it seems, just made for it, one comes upon a bed of geraniums and marigolds planted by Harve McDowell, president of the Horticultural Society. He takes pride in several more flower beds in the village which he and several H.S. members tend faithfully. And another village council park has sprung up, the Blyth Inn Park, situated a few steps from main street. It borders the Inn's parking lot. A long extensive planter it is, containing three Globe Maple trees and numerous shrubs to which next year flowers will be added. Blyth's Yanchus has begun work on what app: ars ill be a brick and stone sign at the so her limits of the village. Next yea yeller. on Highway 4 will have a ew look at "Blyth". - The transformation on the main street has been realized largely through the team work within, and the co-operation among three groups: Blyth Council, its Maintenance Crew and the Horticultural Society. They all treat growing things, excluding weeds, with tender -loving care. . Mary Holland, for instance, did just that for the flowers around Memorial Hall, for nearly 10 years. This year, several en- thusiastic Horticultural Society members - the McDowells. Walden, Snells. Madills. and others have accepted this responsibili- ty, and it is a big one. Hundreds and hun- dreds of people each summer derive pleasure from gazing at the beauty of this well cared for flower border. The poet Keats wrote, "A thing of beauty is a joy forever." This being so, the money spent by Blyth residents, directly or in- directly, has been spent wisely. They have striven to give their village's main street area new attractive qualities, many of • nal values. ..1 i. Blyth United Church had special guests By Melda McElroy Enthusiasm was the order of the day at the Blyth United Church last Sunday. It was evident in the spirited singing of the men's choir; in the congregational singing of hymns and in the stirring message by Rev. Ken Bauman which was based on three Scriptural passages. Rev. Ken pointed out that we all have to face hard knocks and sor- rows at one time or another, but with the support of the Almighty and obedience to His Will, the yoke becomes easy and the burden light. An interesting feature of this service 'was .one pew filled with 10 happy looking guests of Grant and Pat Sparling who had asked if they could attend church with their hosts. Four couples live in the Holland, Michigan vicinity; the other, in Woodstock, Ont. They all travelled intheir motor homes. One couple, in particular, felt right at home at the service, for in their locality there are 'Baumans, not one Ken Bauman but two. They enjoyed during their weekend stay at the Sparlings, the Blyth Festival play, Garage; a barbecue, a luncheon at Ben - miller Inn and a. tour of Goderich. During the winters, these six couples are neighbours in the Ft. ..Pierce district in Florida. Special Birthday Mrs. Louise Buttel was feted on several occasions in honor of her birthday. Mrs. Jim Lawrie and daughter Agnes Wharton held an afternoon tea for neighbours and friends in the Lounge of Queens Villa. Serving tea and punch With birthday cake and ice cream were Laurie Wharton, Krista Laurie and Selena Hazlitt. Focal points in the Lounge were the • special cake made by Agnes and beautifully decorated by Sheila Wharton and the 50 to 60 congratulatory cards on the piano. Louise's cousin, Dr. Jean Westermann . and husband Dr. Gerd Westermann of Burl- ington, and cousin Earl Mills and Eva Mills of Walton entertained her at luncheon at Benmiller Inn. Carrie Cudmore and Louise were guests of Jean Kaine at Oro Beach; Lake Simcoe, for four days, and while at Oro, Mrs. Kaine's daughter held a dinner party at her home in Louise's honor which seven cousins attend- ed. - ,seniors enjoy picnic..
